Insurance question

Hello,

I will be meeting with an RE next month. I'm under my husband's insurance, which covers IUI 100% and IVF 75%, but does not cover any medication. My company plan covers the medication, so I was thinking of using them as the primary insurer and my husband's as the secondary. If I meet with the RE before I switch, would it be a preexisting condition and not be covered?

Does anyone have any knowlege in this area that they can share?

Also, they said it was covered but needed "prior approval". Is this standard?

Re: Insurance question

As far as I know you cant choose which one is primary. Your coverage is primary your DHs secondary. It works well this way, even if your coverage covers nothing for IVF the RE will bill thme for denial and then send the EOB to your DH carrier.

If you dont have your own policy yet, as long as you sign up during open enrollment I dont believe they can consider it a pre-existing condition.

Re: Insurance question

I'm getting ready to see the RE for the first time as well. I called my insurance company to get some facts regarding my policy. I also was looking at the legal info links on the Resolve website. NY State Law requires a person to be covered for 12 months under their policy to be eligible. All policies are different and there are other ways they can get around paying for some things. If you have access to insurance that pays for IVF I'd consider cost of meds vs cost of IVF before changing. But you can call both companies to find out exactly what is covered. For example, my insurance company told me even though it is not specifically listed in my benefits sperm washing is covered. Just a thought and good luck!!
