Re: Tax Q: Calling all NYPD Cops and Spouses!

It's the same thing for the FDNY. Basically, if someone is injured in the Line of Duty (LODI), they do have to pay tax on the income they earn while out on medical leave. Taxes are taken out of their bi-weekly paychecks though and you get back the tax when you do your tax return.

I tried to Google it and get a better explanation! I'm not sure if it's already subtracted out of income or you are supposed to subtract it out. I can check on DH's 2005 taxes, someone else did them but, I had to input them into TurboTax for him (which basically meant I had to redo them because you can't just input the numbers).

Good luck!

Re: Tax Q: Calling all NYPD Cops and Spouses!

If I were you, I would spend the money to have a professional who handles the NYPD and FDNY taxes every year do your taxes for you from now on. Since I've been a cop, I've always paid an "expert" to handle the "in's and out's" of my taxes b/c things like LOD (line of duty--which is tax free monies earned when out with a LOD injury) and other "expendables" like uniforms, travel, accessories, etc...can be deducted and they know the "Exact" amount that we can get away with without having to worry about auditing from the IRS.

My average tax refund over the last 7 years has been between 8K and 12K.....so, it pays to have somebody who knows the NYPD deductibles like the back of their hand. Have your brother ask around his precinct and find out who the local guy(s) are in your area.

I have used DJ Steve (in the Bronx) or a guy up here in Rockland for the last 7 years.

Good luck!
