Eventful morning ended in calling the cops! (long)
I've had an eventful morning...
I'm working from home today because Cablevision was coming to check out my internet connection - it's been pretty bad lately.
I hear the Cablevision truck pull up and go to the door and see a medical center Ambulette across the street. Then I see my neighbor's elderly father come to the door and fall on the front steps!
I ran across the street and helped the Ambulette driver stand him up, expecting her to take charge - tell me how to lift him, what to do. But she just stands there with a deer-caught-in-the-headlights look on her face.
So I took control, told her how to hook her arm under his armpits to lift him. Once he was standing, she went to release her arm and I told her not to! He was unsteady on his feet and needed to get himself oriented.
Then she starts to pull him to walk in the house and again, I had to stop her because he only had one slipper on - he was trying to put his foot back in.
So we helped him into the house and I noticed the sectional carpet at the door was all out of place and knew what happened - he must have slipped on it as he was coming out the door. He kept telling me he was sorry, that he wanted to come to the door to tell us he wasn't going to the hospital today. She again, just stood there.
So I checked to make sure he didn't have any injuries and walked him to his chair to sit down. He said he was ok; didn't want to go to the hospital. He thanked us and we walked out.
She asked me how I knew to do all that. I told her that I was a medic for many years, and cared for the elderly on ambulette/ambulance runs. It appears that the Long Beach Medical Center doesn't train their drivers on how to act in the case of an emergency.
And the whole time, the Cablevision driver just watched. He was standing at my door, within full view of everything that happened.
I find it amazing, that even your very basic ethical kindness doesn't prompt you to act in some way. Ask to help, something. When I walked up to him, he said, "You're having trouble with your internet connection?"
So a few minutes later, as he was leaving, he mentioned that the construction crew that's building a house next door has their extension cord plugged into my house.
Through numerous conversations with the guy working there and my landlord, I find out that the building contractor had already been told NOT to use the outlet.
So my landlord tells me to call the police!
My first instinct was to tell HIM to call the police - it's not my house! But I did anyway, and the police said, sorry it's not your house. Have the landlord call. So I told my landlord and he said he was getting on the phone with the police and would stop by later.
In the meantime, the construction guy comes back over and says that the tenants upstairs made a deal with the builidng contractor. The contractor paid him $100. to use the electricity.
Back on the phone with the landlord, and he said but YOU are paying for that electricity, not the upstairs people. So I turn off the breaker for my floor but the outlet still works. So it really is the people upstairs.
All this, and it's not even noon. I'm waiting for the police, the landlord, or the upstairs tenants to knock on my door any minute...

It's been at least since early spring. Turns out, it's not my electricity - it's the people upstairs who pay. But still... they just do it without asking because no one's around to tell them not to!
I have this nagging feeling though that I want to check on the man across the street, to make sure he's ok. To give him my number and tell him to call me if he needs something before his daughter gets home.
But I'm worried about him having to rush to answer the door and getting hurt again.
I was going to wait till his daughter came home too but I have this horrible feeling, like what if he really was hurt but didn't know? And by the time we walked away, he started to feel pain?
He thought I worked for the hospital, he didn't recognize me. I don't know what to do.
What do you think?

I don't get this.... why would either party do this? The contractor thought it would be cheaper to pay 100.00 then the real power bill on the other property that probably has no usage from 5PM - 8AM? How long have they been there, I guess if its months then it may work out, but still ?!?!
ETA: And if it really IS months, then how silly is the other tenant to take just 100 bucks from them.

You are a great neighbor and tenant! Too bad the rest of the people you deal withi aren't as good as you!
I would stop by your neighbor's house if you don't have a phone number. It's better to check in on him just in case.

Re: Eventful morning ended in calling the cops! (long)
Forgot to mention, the guy upstairs is a lawyer... So who knows what he said to the contractor to get $100 out of him.
I have no idea if it's monthly or what. It's one of those big three-prong orange extension cords that they're using for circular saws, sanders, etc. I guess they require a lot of juice.

Wow, what a morning!!! You are a great neighbor to have around. If that was my grandfather across the street I would want you to be their neighbor. I hope everything works out with the electricity, I would surely be pisssed about the whole situation. Keep us updated.

Re: Eventful morning ended in calling the cops! (long)
I went over and he didn't answer the door. I went next door to my other neighbor to see if she had a phone number for anyone else in the family and she's not home either.
I went back, rang the bell, knocked again, looked over the fence to the backyard and no one answered.
I know he's hard of hearing and that he has an apartment in the back of the house so it's possible he's just not hearing it. Or doesn't want to answer the door.
I called the hospital and they gave me the phone number and I just called but got the answering machine. I left a message to tell them to call me for anything, to make sure everything's ok, and left my number.
I don't know, if there's anything else I should do? Should I call the police?

Maybe call your local precinct and see what they say.

I think that's good advice. I might also try to go to the back of the house (if that's possible) and call to him to see if he will open up or come out or respond. If I didn't get a response, I would call the cops.

Re: Eventful morning ended in calling the cops! (long)
Thanks for your help everyone.
My neighbor came home and called me, he's ok.
He had a stroke a month ago and hasn't been able to move around that well since. She has aides for him during the day while she's at work, but today was the first day the aide wasn't able to be there. They help him get off and on the hospital bus that picks him up. But since the aide wasn't coming, they cancelled the hospital pickup. The bus came anyway, and he was trying to tell them that he wasn't able to go when he fell.
He didn't tell her that he fell when she got home. She didn't know till she heard my message and called me. But she checked him out and everything's ok. He didn't feel steady on his feet and was worried about standing and walking after his fall, so he didn't get up to answer the door or the phone.
I feel so much better. It's such a hard situation, caring for a parent who is disabled. She's been struggling with this for the few years we've been living here.
I forgot what it was like, helping other people like I helped this morning. I'm glad at least that I was there to help.
And by the way, about the cable... We have problems during peak times, between 7 and 9pm, so I don't even know if what he did fixed it today! I guess I'll find out soon enough.

and let me tell you, not only do I work in construction but my husband is always using power tools around the house and when he redid our dining room I'd say the electric for the table saw, compressor, and various other tools tripled our electric bill! and that was with him only working on it on the weekends... They use alot of juice!
