If it is DH's family, I'd probably only say something if DH was ok with it - unless it was a matter of life or death.

I'd make DH say something if it was involving my ILs side. On my side, I say something.

In this situation, where even his own family knows it is a bad decision, but are not speaking up- I would not speak up...otherwise I would mention it to DH and let him decide ...I think it MOST cases, maybe not all...I would not say anything to the person

Oh that NOT saying anything in family would not fly. The joke of our family is, if you make a dumba$$ move or do something stupid, we WILL tell you, If you cant handle it dont come by. DH learned very early on if you cant hang you will be eaten up and spit out. We are very vocal and have no problems letting ourselves go. So to answer your ?? Yes we would say something.

ETA: I would tell IL's the same thing.

I find myself "sharing" my opinions with DH in hopes that if he feels the same he will say something. And sometimes he asks my opinion to kind of think through his own in these situations. But publicly I keep my mouth shut because I'm not sure that my opinions are really welcomed with everyone else.

My family is my family - I can say what I want to them (within reason) if I think that they're making a terrible mistake.

With my ILs, I will keep my mouth shut. If DH privately presses for my opinion, I give to him as tactfully as possible under the condition that he will keep it to himself.

I deal with this on an almost daily basis.
DH's siblings are (no words)

his parents ask me advice all of the time. I don't point blank tell them what they shoudl do, but I do tell DH and hopes they communicate it to them.

I would only give my TRUE opinion to MY family, I don't think it is my place to give my opinions to my in-laws, that si my hubby's place.

Depends...is it someone they are marrying and no one likes them...not really my place to say anything IMO. That's more of a gray area thing. Relationships, job, how to raise kids, those are gray areas IMO. If its about getting help for drugs or doing something illegal, that kind of a blatantly black and white, right or wrong kind of issue, then yes, I think I would say something.
