Usually means insert.
Like if you want to insert a word or phrase into a sentence.
But it doesn't seem to make sense in this context.

i have no idea but i just wanted to say i once stayed up all night googling things that someone wrote in my textbook - that ended up being TOTALLY unrelated to the topic of the book.

I would analyze it too. Could it be that they were comparing it to a previous edition and those were the changes? Just an idea.

This was the reason I couldn't buy used books back in college. I'd get distracted by other people's notes. I needed a clean slate all to my self

I know the carat (^) is used in programming to denote a space sometimes.
Why it would be written in your book in that kind of context, I have no idea.
I know I will handwrite it out when I'm writing DOS commands so I remember where to put the spaces though.
