I would think the limbo, hula hoops, anything water related- pool, sprinkler, etc...

Depending on the ages of the kids, beachball dodge ball and then they get to take a beach ball home. I just went to a party where this was done and the kids had a blast.

I would definitely do limbo. I would also do a hula hoop contest - make everyone wear a grass skirt to compete. A scavenger hunt with tropical themed clues would be fun. A coconut toss (think Shotput) is good if you have a long backyard where nothing is in danger of getting destroyed. A surf contest would be a fun idea.. you make the kids stand on giant balls and take a surfer stance.. see who can stay on the longest.

I had a luau for my younger son's 1st birthday.
We had:
Aloha Sack racing , from Oriental Trading.
Limbo
Fish shaped pinata
Hula Hoop contest
If the kids were older, I would do a Hula relay race.
Who can put their Hula outfit on the fastest (grass skirt, leis, coconut bra [over their shirt, of course], flower in the hair)
