Re: If a house you LOVED was in an "iffy" school district?
Posted by prncss
Ok, put it this way.....I bought in a neighborhood that is gorgeous, by the water, walk to the parks, the ferry, great families all around, but I've heard some iffy things about the school district, upon my own investigating and speaking to many parents of many children of all ages in the school district, we decided to buy here because everyone is happy that I've spoken to. Now, here's the kicker...my friends just bought a house in a district that is supposedly top knotch and always receives accolades in reviews and what not, well, guess what? They have a raging heroin problem in their high school and had to bring in drug sniffing dogs and what not. So, you never know if a good district really IS good.
TOTALLY agree, this happens all the time, and I know where you are talking about too. It's sad. I think if you are good involved parents, that is the best education.

I wouldn't, its ALL about the resale value of the house, no matter where you send your kids to school! The better the school district, the more money you can get for your house if you ever decide to sell.

We can debate this forever but this theory is flawed. I bought a house in Ridge, its a 5 bedroom 3 bathroom house on a 1/4 acre built in 1987 I paid $260,000 in 2004 If the exact same house was available in Wading River at the same time it would have sold for $650,000 I KNOW when I sell my house be it in ten years or tomorrow I need to price it for what it is. I cannot expect anyone to pay a lexus price for a toyota. Its just common sense. Houses in "iffy" school districts sell JUST as well as houses in "desirable" districts if they are priced right. In fact over the next several years of people living more within their means lower priced homes with reasonable taxes will likely sell much better than homes that require jumbo loans & have backbreaking taxes.

I agree with PP, SDs change all the time. Lawrence SD is a prime example...was a stellar SD in the 90s (and previous years) and now it has deteriorated to nothing. Yet it still remains a desirable area.

That happened to me. I am sending my kids to Catholic school.
