According to the CDC:
http://www.cdc.gov/swineflu/swineflu_you.htm

How can someone with the flu infect someone else?
Infected people may be able to infect others beginning 1 day before symptoms develop and up to 7 or more days after becoming sick. That means that you may be able to pass on the flu to someone else before you know you are sick, as well as while you are sick.

How long can an infected person spread swine flu to others?
People with swine influenza virus infection should be considered potentially contagious as long as they are symptomatic and possible for up to 7 days following illness onset. Children, especially younger children, might potentially be contagious for longer periods.

I interpret that to mean that you can't be a carrier without coming down with the flu yourself in a day or so.... After a week, you are no longer contagious, even if you have the symptoms.

I'm not sure what being dirty has to do with getting the flu...but yes, you should be in the clear, according to what we know about the infection at this moment.

Because everyone, even the CDC say that the best prevention is to wash your hands often. The implication is that if you *don't* wash often, you're more susceptible to the flu.

I understand that. I took umbrage with the assumption that someone with scraggly hair and a beard wouldn't wash their hands.

Sorry, just feeling sensitive today, I guess! Chat Icon
