Re: Spinoff: Are you expected to do personal work for you boss?
This job - NO
My previous job - sometimes, but was never taken advantage of
the job before that, I worked for the devil himself and he would have me do the most annoying personal things for him.

Re: Spinoff: Are you expected to do personal work for you boss?
I am an assistant so yes I do and yes it is expected. Although, my boss has only asked me to do a few things in the three years I have been there.

Re: Spinoff: Are you expected to do personal work for you boss?
No I am not expected to. On occasion I will pick up something for him when I go to lunch but I don't count that plus he would do the same for me when he goes out.

Re: Spinoff: Are you expected to do personal work for you boss?
I do quite a bit of personal work for my boss, but it is not 'expected' really .. he definitely does not take advantage and he (and his wife) are always quite appreciative so I really cannot gripe about it too much..
I've gotten gifts for his friends/family on his behalf, planned vacations for him and his family, done some work in regards to his boat/sailing trips and home/real estate documents.. but honestly its such a nice change of pace from legal work all day long, I tend to enjoy it It's actually cool to be able to spend unlimited amounts of $$ on HIS dime

Re: Spinoff: Are you expected to do personal work for you boss?
i am the only female broker in an office of 40. there are 4 admin girls that tend to all the guys and me.
however, in my deparement its me and my boss. and yes, he does ask em for personal things - like help finding restaurants or making reservations. i pay for access to zagats so he has me do this alot. he also asks me to help with his kids homework!!! (but his family is very appreciateive) ive also renewed his ez pass and once i ordered him a replacement school ring.
do i get annoyed? sometimes. does he value my help? yes and i do get rewarded.
would i prefer if he asked the admin girls to help him? YES. His personal b.s. is NOT my job.

Re: Spinoff: Are you expected to do personal work for you boss?
I had a job when I was 18 where the service manager was able to bring his dog to work. It was an office in a type of repair shop. Anyway he used to send me out to buy dog food.
And when he would get weird cravings he would send me out to search for egg creams and other random things.

Re: Spinoff: Are you expected to do personal work for you boss?
Yes I do personal things for her. She is always telling my how much she appreciates it and I can tell she doesn't like asking me. Although she is very high on the food chain here she started in "the mail room" and knows the deal.
I don't mind the personal things, but I would like to be in the business more. We are working on that.
I can't complain, I get compensated fairly, she never loses it on me and compliments me to her staff and her superiors all over the place.
My job is high profile and it allows me to interact with high profile executives of the firm and get exposure. It's a great place to start here and I hope in a few years I can work up to officer with her help. I find a little goes a long way and I'm really lucky..
...now about that bonus?

Re: Spinoff: Are you expected to do personal work for you boss?
Back when I was an assistant, I paid his mortgage, wrote out his cc bills, balanced his checkbook, got his lunch, argued with the maintenance manager of his luxury condo to replace his toilet seat...you name it.
ETA: I didn't resent it at all. I loved working with this guy. And I knew it was just a stepping stone to where I wanted to go. And I was well-paid.
