Walmart To Give Workers Turkey Dinner

I agree- but if that employee actually wants to work then it's fine.

Re: Walmart To Give Workers Turkey Dinner

There are hospital workers, law enforcement....many people have to work on Thanksgiving. Why does everyone freak out if retailers are open? People are getting holiday pay and a dinner. Most people need it. Jmo

Of course it's fine if the person wants to work and is getting time and a half for it. Sure, go ahead. But I don't think that's the case for all of these employees. And I don't think it's a fair comparison to say law enforcement and hospital workers who have to work in order to save lives is the same thing as retail. And both of my parents were in law enforcement and had to work holidays when I was a kid. I don't think it's the same thing at all.

It's different when retailers are open because its not essential. No one will die without shopping on Thanksgiving unlike in healthcare and law enforcement.

OMG are you serious!? My DH is a retail manager he does NOT get overtime or holiday pay and doesn't get to pick whether he works or not...he has to end of story. Police, nurses, doctors, etc are ESSENTIAL workers. Getting a deal on a flat screen is not essential.

It's a nice thing for them to do for those who are working.

Back in the day when I was a kid working in retail on Black Friday and the day after Xmas they provided breakfast and lunch for everyone. It's a nice gesture, working still sucked but at least they fed you. Chat Icon

This. No one needs to go shopping on Thanksgiving. You can't even compare.

I'm working retail on thanksgiving and there is no holiday pay or overtime. I'm making minimum wage and have to be there at 745. Which is fine by me bc my kids will go to bed not much later. But all employees HAVE to work black Friday we were told this upon hire and it's a 10 hour shift. I'm not mad about this just shedding some light as a retail employee.

Exactly!!! Chat Icon

I've worked in "essential" positions and most employees get holiday pay. I've also worked in retail and got NOTHING extra- no holiday, no overtime, nothing. I don't know why you assume retail stores give holiday pay, because most don't!!!!!!!!!!! They are 2 very different things IMO. How can you even compare?!?!

Getting back to the OP.

I think it's nice they're offering them dinner.
A lot of retail stores don't even do that.

And a lot more are opening this year. BUT that's a different threadChat Icon

My husband works in retail - they put a sign-up sheet for those that want to work Turkey Day. He said the sheet was full - however, they do get paid extra.

Of course it is ESSENTIAL for me to save a couple hundred on a flat screen. Screw you, screw your husband and anyone else for getting in the way of me saving a buck!

Who cares if you would like to spend the holiday together?!

Oh wait, unless it's MY family member who will be missing holiday dinner. That's right!

(2boys4me - please note my post is OOOZING with sarcasm.)

God, I am POSITIVE that if everyone's husband on this board had to work on Thanksgiving and miss spending the holiday with their family and getting to sit down at the dinner table with their families, the pov would be A LOT different.

Way to have just smidge of compassion for these families who won't get to be together for the holiday. Chat Icon

that's because he's management and salaried. I went through the same for years. I wasn't upset by it bc I signed up for it. I knew the deal...but after many years in the business...yes, you do realize that it's the salaried management who are the real peons...not the pt or even ft workers who et paid hourly and are entitled to OT. I have not come across a company that does not pay hourly workers OT for holidays. I'm not even sure if it's legal bc i can tell you those cheap-o companies would def try to get away with not paying it if they could.

family owned and operated...off the books jobs maybe don't pay OT but most retail corporations do.

I was the one who couldn't attend christmas eve dinner. I've been in those shoes. Of course it sucked...but it was my decision to work in retail management. I blamed nobody but myself and knew if i wanted a change, then i needed to find another job. At the time...the security of the salary was more important to me and i knew i had sacrifices to make for it.

That's a nice gesture, especially since a lot of Wal-Mart employees would have difficulty paying for a nice Thanksgiving meal on their own.
