Re: Need help/advice/ hugs regarding TB test

I worked in a hospital for three years, with the HIV positive homeless population. I was told I would more than likely be exposed there.

Although I never was, I know people who have been. You can go on a medication for 6 months to prevent if you ever are exposed again, it turning to true TB.

Re: Need help/advice/ hugs regarding TB test

I worked with people caring for the disabled and they all had to take tb tests before they started working. MANY of them came back positive and all they needed to do was get a chest x-ray to be cleared to work. I think that it is not that uncommon to get a positive tb test- once your x-rays show it was just exposure then there is nothing to worry about. HTH!! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Need help/advice/ hugs regarding TB test

I used to have to take a test every year when I was teaching. One of the faculty was born in the Phillipines and he said nearly everyone he knew who was born or raised there had been exposed to it at some time. So he always had to get the chest x-ray too. Maybe if you have travelled to other countries that have a greater degree of exposure, you may have been exposed there?

I don't think it is very serious, but I can understand why you would be freaked out about it.

Re: Need help/advice/ hugs regarding TB test

My husband has the same situation. He is a volunteer firefighter, and was probably exposed while transporting someone in the ambulance. He tested positive before we met (unknown to me) and the IDIOTS never told him to never get another test in the arm. His arm didn't necrose or fall off, but he had an absolutely huge welt. THEN he tells me he had tested positive in the past. So, he needs to be treated, as do you. You need to be treated because the infection, once you're exposed, can lie dormant in your body for years and years, and if you ever get sick with anything serious and you are run down, it can surface. The best time to be treated is when you are under 35. It's 9 months of pills which is a drag, but you really should be treated. He will be starting his treatment soon. You should be evaluated by a pulmonologist if you have a positive tb test, hopefully, that is where you had the chest x-ray.

Re: Need help/advice/ hugs regarding TB test

My FH has the same thing. Since the first time he had the prick test, his results showed that he had been exposed to TB (as a child!).

He now has to go for a chest xray everytime he gets tested. It's no big deal, really, he just makes the chest xray appt when he makes the physical appt.
