1 year old throwing things

So, for the past few weeks DS has been throwing things, balls, blocks, beads, stacking rings. At first I thought "OK, he is watching them roll, seeing what happens, cause and effect" I found it interesting to see him obviously thinking about what was happening. Now it is pretty much all he does with these types of toys! He doesn’t throw them AT things, just out onto the floor so he can see them roll and listen to the sounds they make. He isn't super mobile, he scoots around on his butt or belly, but no real crawling; the throwing has been encouraging to move more, but I'm starting to wonder if I should be nipping this in the bud.

We have a set of blocks that have animals on them and if I lay them out to identify the animals, he doesn't throw them; when I ask him 'where is the pig' he'll pick it up to hand it to me, but his stacking blocks are pretty much projectiles at this point.

We bought him wooden alphabet blocks for Christmas and if he starts throwing those, he could hurt someone or something.

I have started saying no when he starts throwing things and he'll hand one or two to me instead and then start throwing again.

Is this a fascination that they get over, or should I be really focusing on getting him to stop?

Re: 1 year old throwing things

My DS is 15 months old and he's been throwing things for the same amount of time as well.

As long as he isn't throwing them at someone, or throwing his food off the tray, I let him throw.

Leave it. He isn't destroying anything, and he is learning cause and effect - it is part of his development. He isn't doing it to be destructive. When he is older and he is doing it for other reasons that is another issue...

I agree--DS did this at that age and now he has stopped

Thanks guys, that's what I was thinking. He has started throwing his cheerios on the floor too and I am trying to get him to stop that. That is really what got me wondering; I thought maybe he is confused why he can throw some things and not others. I guess he'll learn the difference with time.

Ds is a big thrower... i read in one of the parenting magazines that boys tend to do alot of throwing because it is how they are wired... essentially that is how they discover things..... kinda like a boys will be boys mentality....

Oh trust me - they definitely know. DS will throw something off his high chair and then look at me to see what I'll do Chat Icon but if he throws a toy he just laughs.

1 is still young. DS was about 20 mos when he started throwing stuff.

New house rule: WE DON'T THROW TOYS, WE THROW KISSES *muh*

Now I asked him if he threw something and he blows me a kiss and picks it up.

Chat Icon DS does the same thing when he throws food, when I say no he gives me a sly smile and drops another cheerio ....then i take them away -thankfully it is only cheerios and not all of his food!
