10 wk old n congestion--help

sorry i haven't been on much now that i'm back at work and ds is in daycare, its been a rough adjustment. anyway, i hope you have some words of wisdom.

this is his first full week of daycare and last night he had a hard time breathing--very stuffy nose. i tried the aspirator -nothing, there aren't any dried boogies in his nostrils, it seems like he's congested in his sinuses. i feel so bad for him and want to make him better, but i am not sure how. he has a doc appt next tuesday.

i guess its the daycare thing, but im bf, so i figured that would boost his immune system...what should i do to help my baby?Chat Icon

thanks - i'll try that. my husband's co workers suggested saline drops, but i'm nervous to do something when he's this young...

the saline drops by little noses are safe - i had to use them for DD at 8-9 weeks for her cold too and the humidifier - she was VERY congested so we also were told to let her sleep in her infant seat or swing - upright with humidifier. Chat Icon

My DS had a cold at 2 weeks, 10 weeks and now has bronchiolitis at 16 weeks.

You have to take baby into the bathroom. Run the shower on the hottest setting and let baby sit in his bouncy seat and let the room fill up. Sit in there with them and put saline drops in. Wait 2 minutes, do it again. Then take the aspirator (you have to go ALL THE WAY UP the nose),hold the other nostril and slowly pull the mucous out. You would be surprised at what a hot shower and saline will allow to come out. It's gross but neccessary. Also, tap baby's back on either side of the spine -- cup your hand and do nice hard taps (don't bruise the baby, but you want to loosen the mucuous in their lungs). Stay in the bathroom about 15 mibnutes ... both you and baby will be sweating so wear as little as possible.
Do this at least 3x per day.

Also saline and aspirate a few other times throughout the day.

At night have the humidifer on.

You DO NOT want it to turn into bronchiolitis or pnemonia, believe me.

Take the baby to the doctor to check baby's lungs.

Keep a good idea on Dc breathing..it could be RSV.. a contagious respiratory disease he may have caught from other kids a daycare. Good Luck..call your pmd and make sure it isn't rsv bronchiolitis

Cool mist humidifier. They also say that cool night air helps. If you can wrap DS up in a couple of blankets and just sit outside with him for 5 minutes, it would be good. Saline is totally safe and helps A LOT!
