More Nostalgia - Old School Playgrounds!!!
Are you sad that your kids will never get to play on some of the things you loved as a kid because they've been deemed unsafe???
We used to love the merry-go-round thing in the McDonald's playground - no matter how many times my brother flew off of it! - and it was a very very sad day when it got bolted to the floor!
And the vision of my mother circa 1984 climbing into the Hamburglar to fetch my brother is still etched in my memory!

Yes!!!! Now all the kids have are these plastic looking things. We used to have swings, see-saws, these horse swings(someone would sit on one end and someone else on the other) at school. We used to love going outside to play.

Re: More Nostalgia - Old School Playgrounds!!!
OMG -- my playground had metal monkey bars & swings. We used to get scraped, scratched and bruised all the time from kneeling on the bars.
I too have an image of my (afraid of hieghts) mother climbing to the top of the monkey bars to get my sister down.

Re: More Nostalgia - Old School Playgrounds!!!
I'm not sad about my kids not playing on playground equipment that's now deemed unsafe. I'm pretty sure most moms feel the same way. I want my kids to be adventurous as I was - climbing trees, etc. It took Joseph's head just missing a wooden plank at the school around the corner to make me think better safe than sorry.
That email about riding in cars with no seat belts or air bags, our playgrounds covered with bright colored lead-based paint, etc as carefree days infuriates me.

We used to love the monkey bars...and you hardly ever see an iron slide anymore. I remember in the summer, those things would burn your hands
ETS: Also, remember the flat swings? We used to stand up and go as high as we could. so many kids fell and hurt themselves but, we never learned.

Re: More Nostalgia - Old School Playgrounds!!!
in 1st grade (1981) Buddy LaMay fell off the climbing chains and tire swing on our school's wooden playground and the next day it was taken down. I think everyone I graduated with remembers Buddy LaMay and the tireswing!!!

What about the teeter-totters? You could be mean and jump off, and make the kid on the other end slam into the ground

Oh, I didn't mean to imply that children should be playing on or around things taht are blatantly unsafe. It's just that the definition seems to have become a bit warped - and things - not only playgrounds, but toys, etc - have become so homogienized and conservative. And to be honest, I don't think it's done in the interest of children's safety - I think drastic measures are taken to insure that the companies, organizations, what have you, that run these playgrounds don't get sued. I think that's sad....
ETA: Of course you only want what's best for your children - any mother would. And from the stories you tell, it sounds like you're a great mom and seem to show your kids an admiral balance of fun and authority. And I'm sure that kids today will look back on their experiences as fondly as we look back on ours...I'm just feeling a little nostalgic!

Re: More Nostalgia - Old School Playgrounds!!!
I don't know if anybody ever went to the playground at Eisenhower Park, but there used to be this thing that looked like a giant hamster wheel made of wood. You could get in there and start walking and it would turn. Talk about dangerous! I always got splinters from that thing too!

I loved these too! I'm doubt they're around any more. There used to be ones at Islip and East Islip schools, but they were replaced with plastic ones. I always got tons of splinters, but they were so much fun.

Does anyone remember Wantagh Space Park from back in the day??? The old Rocketship slide? The flying saucer/spinner type things? That park was the best! Not quite as fun these days

I know what you meant. It was really a secret MIL vent over the dumb emails she sends.
And I miss the Rocketship too.

See, I'm kind of sad that I'll never get to climb to the top of the Rocketship in 3 inch heels and tight Jordache jeans to rescue a 4 year old covered in dirt and melted ice pop!

Tire swings were the best. Also merry go rounds were you would spin around so fast that you thought you'd puke!

Here in my neighborhood in Queens the playgrounds still have the Iron Slides. The flat swings and the see-saws are gone.
I used to love the flat swings. Hate the ones they have now. I actually went on one of the swings a few months ago. It was only for 5 minutes but bad move. I felt dizzy for like 2 days. No joke. It finally hit me that I really am getting old.
