13 week old & public pool??

We're going to a hotel this weekend that has an indoor heated pool. I'm not sure when it's okay to expose DD to a public pool.
What do you ladies think??

Re: 13 week old & public pool??

I wouldn't take my chances in a public pool just yet. My DD's pediatrician didn't even want her in any pool until 6 months.

Re: 13 week old & public pool??

I had DD enrolled and taking private lessons at Saf-T Swim at 3 months so I would be fine with it. As long as the pool looked clean. Chat Icon

It's one of those deals where it's a hotel that has a water park in it... there's an indoor park and an outdoor park. It's a super nice hotel, very well maintained, four stars. But the whole idea of a public swimming area just makes me nervous. Maybe I'll just take her on the tube with me in the lazy river... and keep her out of the water.

Really? DS has been in pools since 11 weeks old and no one ever mentioned this to us.

I think I would err on the side of caution and say no, and I am pretty liberal. If it was a pool in someone's backyard, then sure..

the source is the mayoclinic.com

Question
Infant swimming: Do indoor pools pose an asthma risk?
I've heard that infant swimming in chlorinated, indoor pools might cause childhood asthma. Is it safe for my 5-month-old to swim indoors?
Answer
from Matthew Rank, M.D.

There isn't enough information linking infant swimming and asthma to warrant keeping your baby out of indoor pools.

Researchers began looking at a possible connection between infant swimming and asthma to explain why asthma is on the rise among children. Some researchers theorize that chlorine — a common disinfectant used to keep pools clean — binds with swimmers' sweat and urine to create byproducts in the water and air that may harm an infant's lungs and put him or her at risk of developing asthma. Indoor pools have higher concentrations of these byproducts than do outdoor pools. Babies are thought to be at particular risk because their lungs are still developing and they tend to swallow irritant-laden water while swimming.

Studies examining the relationship between infant swimming and asthma, however, have produced conflicting results. A 2008 Norwegian study found that infants who swam at age 6 months had a greater risk of having an episode of chest congestion or wheezing in the chest up to age 18 months — if their mothers had a history of allergies. But a 2008 German study found that infants who didn't swim before age 1 had a greater risk of being diagnosed with asthma at age 6.

If your baby participates in infant swimming in indoor pools and you're concerned about asthma, opt for a well-ventilated facility. Ideally, staff members will open doors and windows in the pool area and use fans to boost air flow over the surface of the pool when it's crowded. Also, be sure to rinse yourself and your baby in the shower before entering the pool to reduce the formation of irritants in the water.

Re: 13 week old & public pool??

Nope... first I don't think they're allowed to be in the chlorine that young. DS is 14 weeks and I've only dipped his feet in at my in-laws pool once in a while.

Wouldn't take the chance

No. We went for a 3 day wkend with the kids, and I only dipped my DD's feet/legs in the hotel pool, and she was 5 months at the time. Don't know about chlorine and asthma, but in general I wouldn't want my baby's skin covered in what's basically a disinfectant. And the germ factor is an issue too. I always hear that Coxsackie spreads a lot via pools.
