17 kids and counting
I'm curious what you think about this show. Personally, I think this woman is mentally ill. She speaks in a soft freaky voice and she homeschools all her kids. They must be severely undereducated. I wonder if the mom does it for attention. As long as she has babies it's all about her... Just my psychoanalysis.

Re: 17 kids and counting
I don't watch it. I really feel like the older kids are missing out on so much. Their parents aren't raising them, the older kids are.
Kind of sad, really.

Re: 17 kids and counting
I don't think she's mentally. I think it's a VERY different, non-mainstream lifestyle, but I don't think she's mentally ill -- just like I don't find the Amish to be mentally ill just because they live a very different lifestyle. I also don't think homeschooling in and of itself is horrible.
I think it's not something most of the country is used to seeing something like that, especially not in this area.
I don't necessarily support or agree with their lifestyle or beliefs... but I don't think they are sick or mentally ill.

I agree with Kara. I may not agree or understand their lifestyle but they seem happy and the kids seem well fed, clothed and adjusted. I can think of worse ways to live.

Re: 17 kids and counting
I can understand having a different lifestyle. The Amish are just living a different way of life. The family of 18 kids is a different story. I agree that the mother may have mental issues. It is almost like she has a compulsive disorder or a constant drive for the pregnancy/baby attention. She gets pregnant, has the baby and as soon as the baby is off the breast she hands the baby off to a sibling and is pregnant or trying again. I'm sorry but it does seem a little off. I am all for families helping eachither, kids helping siblings but raising them is different. They don't get to be a kid themselves since they are caring for their siblings and running the house while mom takes care of the newest baby.

Re: 17 kids and counting
I don't think they are mentally ill.
However, they have been on tv a lot over the years, back when there were only 12 or 13 kids.
Even then I remember finding their home-schooling odd. I have no problems with home schooling in general (I do have concerns about the social aspects, etc but whatever).
The concern I had was an episode wherein the mom was talking about their home-schooling and how they do non traditional learning.
In the episode, they visited a local post office and learned how the mail is sorted. Now, that's fine and educational for a class field trip when you are 5 or 6-but some of the kids were teenagers. How educational can that be for them?
It did make be question their version of home schooling, but of course what I saw was only a slice of their life so who knows. I wonder how they test on SATS, etc?

Re: 17 kids and counting
different: yes mental: no
i can see how many of us might raise an eyebrow, but i would rather be raised by those parents than the "little people, big world" parents.
with many of us living in big cities, we see so many horrible things happen to children. this is a loving family. not the norm, but loving.
i'm not crazy about the home-schooling, but then again, i'm not organized enough for my ONE child.

Me too.
One observation I made is that the older kids often seem bored or almost like they can't believe this is their family.
In the episode last night when they were all in the room voting on a name for the new baby, the older son looked bored and one of the older daughters- I think "Jinger", rolled her eyes and looked like she couldnt believe what was going on around her.

I would stay far away from ANY kind of sexual activity if I were one of the kids. They know what can happen! Obviously they have super fertile genes!

In a way, they are part of a society with different beliefs, they are just not all in the same community the way the Amish are.
Thye are in touch with other families with the same beliefs, which include not helping or hindering pregnancy in anyway, also known as the Quiver Full movement.
It's not just a compulsion to have children, it is part of their conservative Christian beliefs which also include:
homeschooling, conservative dress, no popular music, over tv, restricted computer us, & courtship instead of dating.

Re: 17 kids and counting
I agree with what someone said about popping out a new baby and handing it to another kid to take care of. Every episode looks like that. I can not believe that she has any ability to home school a child unless if she is a certified teacher, which she is not. There is no way she can teach her kids older than fifth grade about math, global, literature, etc. She seems to not want to take of the baby she has right now.

I know families on LI that are Christian, home schooling and don't hinder pregnancy and they have 10 kids. Now there is a BIG difference between a mother who tends to her 10 kids and one that has 18 and shifts the responsibilities to the other children so she can get pregnant and have another that the older ones will have to tend to as well. I am not saying she has mental issues like saying she is crazy. It really does seem like she has a compulsive need to be pregnant or have a newborn. A friends exwife was that way (not a strict christian in any way). She loved the attention she got when pregnant or with a newborn and when the attention stopped she would get pregnant again. I think all the media attention is just making this women worse. It's like oh we can get on Good Morning America again if we get pregnant again. You don;t see the rest of the chistians in their following pimping their kids on TV. I'm sorry but imho I think she has some issues.

Re: 17 kids and counting
I feel that their education is just enough to set them up to get married at 20 years old and start pumping out children. My own brother was home-schooled and I'm not knocking that but there is a limit to what they can teach. Even my mother had to hire a math tutor to teach my brother advanced math to pass his tests to graduate. She cannot be giving them the education they need when she has that many kids in pre-k to 12th grade to teach in a day.
And I do agree that it seems like she has a compulsive need for attention and she satisfies that by getting pregnant and having a newborn. This show certainly isn't helping her either.

Re: 17 kids and counting
each one of the older kids has a younger kid that is their "buddy". They are responsible to get them ready in the morning, make sure they are feed, and take care of them. Ummmmm...shouldnt that be a moms responsiblilty?? not an older brother or sister?? Great that you want to have a whole clan of kids BUT you should take care of them...as parents should!
