THE ULTIMATE LAYETTE THREAD
As I mentioned yesterday, I finally decided to take my MIL up on her offer and meet with a layette consultant to buy a layette.
Let's use this thread to give each other information about what we need, what we may feel is a waste, what we feel we need right away and what can wait until after baby comes home.
BTDT moms totally welcome!!!!!!!!!!
Here are some of my thoughts and the pointers I got along the way.............
I must get a Miracle Blanket (and the ladies on parenting prefer them over Swaddle Me.) QUESTION--they say that Swaddle Me is too warm, but is that only b/c they have summer babies? Will I like it for my November baby?
Get 2 of each of the waterproof crib mattress pad and a waterproof bassinet pad if you have a bassinet. I only bought one of each but now I want to change that. The layette lady also recommended crib savers (aka crib bibs or sheet savers).
For the gowns, layette lady said to look and see which companies make them longer--they do not have to fit perfectly and it is better if they are too long (but we heard from a mom that did not like the gowns at all).
you might not want to put the baby into the onesie body suits while the belly button is still healing b/c they may pull at it. So, get some undershirts instead.
must get burp cloths
At least one sweater for the winter.
At least 10 bibs.
Comb and brush set.
OH--and if anyone has pointers on which company's clothes they like and what washes good, etc. Right now I LOVE the style of COCCOLI baby clothes (may be a boys only line) but I would love to know how they hold up and where I can see a big selection.

Good point about the belly button... I never thought of that.
I want to mention the little mittens you can get for their hands so they dont scratch their faces.

I had both the Miracle Blanket and the Swaddle Me and ended up using only the Miracle Blanket. It is a much more secure swaddle if your child is a fighter. My daughter could break out of the Swaddle Me very quickly. I don't think the season is an issue for which one to buy.

How many pairs? The gowns that I picked all seem to have built in mittens that can be folded up if I don't want to use them. I guess I will need less of the mittens but I still need some to be used with other clothing.

Yeah. No. They don't pull at their belly button. DS doesn't even realize he has one NOW and he is 3 months old. Regular old onesies will be fine. Undershirts or t shirts ride up on a newborn like crazy. When DS wears a t shirt I put a onesie underneath it so his skin isn't exposed.
And those mittens were HUGE on DS and didn't last 3 seconds. You just have to deal with their nails.
I had a Swaddle Me. We didn't use it and I just gave them to my friend. Mainly b/c DS doens't like to be swaddled at all.
ETA: The onesie won't pull at the belly button. They are no where close to skin tight, so thy barely touch the belly button

Kate- thanks for posting about the onesies because I was just thinking about that.
How many do we need? I bought a pack of 5 for newborn and 0-3 so far.

Re: THE ULTIMATE LAYETTE THREAD
It's hard to say what size onesies to get. It depends on how big your baby is. I went through Newborns pretty quickly and went into 0-3. One thing to know is the Gerber ones are cut extremely small compared to the Carters ones. I preferred the Carters. You do need a bunch of whichever you choose though, unless you want to do laundry all the time. I would get another pack or 2 of the 0-3's.

Re: THE ULTIMATE LAYETTE THREAD
I have the mittens, but they fall off, so I use socks and pull them all the way up. Works great!! I do prefer the gowns with the mittens in them, but when it's hot, she doesn't wear those.
Also, if you are going with gowns, I would get some that also convert to pieces with legs. The gowns were just wayyy too big on her in the beginning. If they are too long, they sort of get lost in them. I find the snap ones tend to be shorter, which I liked.
Carters onesies are the best. I would get maybe 5-8 of the newborn size. Gerber makes "Just born" sized ones that fit great if your baby too small for newborn sizes (like mine was).
As far as clothes that wash well, I don't buy the boutique brands, so I can't help you with that, but Carters wash and wear the best. Gap is good Old Navy is decentand Babies R Us's private brand is the worst. I typically don't dry any of the nicer things though, since I don't want them to shrink.
Washcloths..I would get 7 or so. Hooded Towels, probably 4. I received three robes and I have used one of them once (and only for a pic). It's just not practical to dry her off with a towel then put a robe on then take it off to get dressed. I'm all about the less steps the better!!
Changing table pad covers - 3! I had 1 for the longest time and finally bought another and realize it's still not enough since she enjoys peeing on them!
Burp cloths...I would get the Gerber diapers and use those as burp cloths. They absorb a lot more than the ones specifically marketed to be burp cloths and they sell them in different colors now at BRU.
Booties..defininately get some newborn size booties since the socks tend to be too big. Carters makes nice ones.
Hats - don't buy too many of these since they tend to run a little big for baby heads. Emma must have 20 hats and only the knit fitted type ones fit her right. The rest sort of flop, unless they have a chin strap (and most don't).

I wouldn't buy more than that now. I've gotten a bunch of onesies as gifts since DS was born. You can always run out and get another package.
I like the Gerber ones for around the house and the white ones as undershirt type deals.
And I would get the NB, DS is still in some NB onesies and he is 14 weeks old (almost 15 weeks old!) The ONLY thing he has outgrown are the 0-3 Gerber onesies, everything else is going strong.

Re: THE ULTIMATE LAYETTE THREAD

BRU sells these onsies. They have an opening cut out for the umbilical cord.

Re: THE ULTIMATE LAYETTE THREAD
Suggestions on clothes:
= go tagless!! As often as possible, get clothes with the tag printed. Gap and Carter's clothes are mostly like that.
= get clothes that snap up the front. DD hates having clothes pulled over her head. And snaps or zippers are much easier than buttons. Try to avoid things that button up the back.
= If you use the sleep gowns and they are sleeveless, you will need something underneath. We used the snap tshirts with the mittens - DH had to go out and buy them our second night home
= Also have a few pairs of feetie PJs on hand. I didn't have any PJs when we got home and never even realised it.

I really think this is a marketing ploy. You do not need it. The onesies don't pull on the umbilical cord and it usually falls off after about 10 days, so why buy something you will only use for 10 days?

Re: THE ULTIMATE LAYETTE THREAD
I would NOT bother with anything regarding the cord. IT falls off so fast and the onsies etc do not bother it at all...
I know I needed more NB clothes at first then I had. Our DS wore NB stuff till about 6 weeks old...
The swaddle me stinks b/c the babies can break out of it as well as overheating. In the winter you will have the heat on so it will still be an issue then as well. The Miracle Blanket is so much better IMO.
I personally didnt like the shirts that snap on, they would ride up his back etc...
So I think I would say buy a small amount of each type of NB clothing like onsies, snap shirts etc and see what you prefer, it seems to be an individual thing.
I did use the no scratch mittens a lot more then I thought I would b/c I was afarid to cut his nails till recently and filing them took a while, sometimes I needed to throw them on.
And NONE of his socks fit, all too big and I cannot find any anywhere..GET booties!

Yeah. DS is starting to just fit into socks now at 3+ months old. BRU does carry some type of newborn or preemie socks that we loved, but I don't know the brand b/c my mom found them for me after we discovered that all the other socks fell off his feet.

Re: THE ULTIMATE LAYETTE THREAD
The socks that I liked the best were the ones that have the little balls around the top of them....they fold over and come in all different colors....very snug on her feet so they don't fall off, but not so snug that they leave marks.
I used receiving blankets to swaddle the baby - works great and she only gets out of it in the morning when she is ready to wake up.
If you are going to be bottle feeding, get a TON of bibs!! They dribble a lot, so that means 1 bib per feeding...you have a feeding every 2-4 hours, so that's a bunch each day, and unless you want to do laundry every day (which you won't want to do) you'll need a lot.
I prefer the sleeping gowns over the footed pajamas....only because Lily falls asleep downstairs first and we bring her upstairs a few hours later, and I like to change her diaper before I bring her up...and I try not to wake her during that diaper change - so the gowns work great!

Re: THE ULTIMATE LAYETTE THREAD
Great idea Kerie!
I noticed at BRU that they had umbilicare body suits, onesies with a whole cut out. I have yet to buy them though.
Also, we got alot of Carters stuff which thrilled me because I always liked their quality. I would always buy them for everyone else. A good friend of mine always told me they wash very well.

= saleslady from layette department. She has kids of her own, plus she's been helping people to put together layettes for a while. She's been very helpful and in a lot of ways she even saved me from some purchases that might have been a waste. In my prior posts, I was against the idea of making an appointment with her, then I went to meet her and I think it was great!

Re: THE ULTIMATE LAYETTE THREAD
My personal experience tip. Especially when you have a DS that grows VERY fast.
Mittens: DS still scratches his face at 10 weeks (today!! ). No mittens. I tried several kind. They all fell. He wears socks. Easy and stays on.
Onesies: I got about 10 for 0-3 months. Some were small (Gerber runs smaller) and he wore those. He now wears 3 months since he was 8 weeks old. 10 was plenty enough.
One piece PJ: I had 5 NB. They lasted for about 3 weeks. I have five in 3 months.
Outfits: I thought I was conservative in my purchases but got several more as presents when DS was born.
In general, I found that he did not need that many clothes. 10 onesies, 5 PJs, 10 outfits (some casual some "dressier.. it's plenty enough). He is growing so fast, I am not even sure he is going to wear all his outfits.
In 6 months, He has 8 pants, 6 PJs, several outfits, several long sleeve tops (for the fall/winter).
Don't buy too many 3 months outfits. Wait to see the weight of your baby and see how fast he grows. You can always go to the store and get a couple more of PJ/onesies.
