Re: 1st Bday Party Gift
Sean had his first 'friend' party this year at 3 year old.......as his mother, I'd prefer a GC always b/c he has SO much stuff - ......but he's just a little kid and gets SO excited over his presents. Once I saw that, I felt like it was AWFUL to not give the kid a toy - So, all of his little friends got toys from Sean for their BDay parties .......

That's exactly my dilemma. I know that as a parent I would prefer GC or even clothing but the little kiddies love toys! Then again it's technically my friend's son not DS's friend

Re: 1st Bday Party Gift
I agree with the above about toys- but at 1 year old, they dont' really "get" it yet, kwim? Once they are in the 3 year old range- yes- toys for sure.
I loved getting summer clothes for DD for her first birthday- I didn't have to buy a thing for her summer wardrode.
I also appreciated gift cards to BRU etc.
We have such limited space in our house and not much room for toys.
ETA- just reread your post. I thought it was a first bday party. As in 1 year old. How old is the guest of honor?

They don't know the difference for a first birthday. I like gift cards so you can get stuff when you need it as opposed to all at once.

The birthday boy is 1 :)
Sorry if I made it confusing, it is DS's first bday party invite and the birthday boy will be 1.

Re: 1st Bday Party Gift
When they are that little, I like to do a GC and a book.

1st Bday Party Gift
For a 1 year old I'd do a GC or cash. DD got a lot of cash gifts, which was perfect far as we're concerned. It all went into the saving's account we have for her. She has way too many toys (and doesn't even play with them) and lots of clothes so I was relieved not to get many actual "gifts". I do like the idea of also giving a book. We LOVE board books and can never have too many of those!

Re: 1st Bday Party Gift
Gift certificates are the best. I usually only give gift certificates if I plan to give more than $50. I almost always give gift certificates to good friends along with a toy and/or book.
If it is an acquaintance or classmate of DS and I am going to spend around $20, I usually buy an age appropriate toy.

1st Bday Party Gift
I loved the presents my DD got for her 1st birthday but she really didn't know much of the difference between a toy and the boy it came in. lol So I prefer GCs but still really love toys.

Re: 1st Bday Party Gift
ask the parent!! i would have preferred more summer toys for DD but i got almost exclusively clothes. she needed clothes too but she didnt need a different dress for every day of the summer and 12 bathing suits (half of which are the wrong size)!!
but in the end any gift is thoughtful, but if you want to make sure you get something useful you should def ask the mom!

Re: 1st Bday Party Gift
For a 1st bday gift, I was good with either. DS received so many gifts - toys, clothing, money and it was all great. It was great that he got toys bc he got some I would not have thought of buying or hadn't seen, clothes was great bc most was Gap and I either kept it or returned for store credit, also great.
Now that DS is 2.5 I prefer toys. He already has a million toys but it's so much fun for them to open gifts. What kid will get excited opening some pants, kwim?
As a parent I don't need/want people to buy him clothes as presents, I do that myself.
