1st birthday party question: gifts...
Do you have DC open the gifts at the 1st birthday or is it like one of those where you do it at home?
I think we should do it at home, but I am not sure if people expect to see the presents.

Same for us.
DD cried hysterically after everyone (40 of them) sang Happy birthday to her, she def would have been overwhelmed again with the presents if she had everyone watching her

We did while everyone was there.
I "helped" her along since she was more interested in the wrapping. About half the party socialized with each other while eating (buffet) and the other half watched us open gifts. My DD has the best reactions to some of these gifts and the gift-givers got to see that.

We'll probably open them at the party. My MIL has this thing that "people want to see a child open the gifts that people give them" and she's a fanatic about it.

same here, it is way too hectic to do it at a hall or restaurant.
If it was at home I think I would have. Like all of her next bdays will be home so yes I would open right after cake.

We had DS open his present the day after his party. Less quieter and chaotic.
We'll play it by ear this year but I think we'll do the same thing.

Opened the gifts at home - after the party. There are always some people that want to see him open gifts but honestly at 1 yo - he's gong to be more interested in wrapping paper.
If you want to add a nice touch, take a photo of him using the gift or opening it & send it along with the thank you.

I would say after- that way you can keep everything together, keep track of who gives what etc. Lots of gifts could be overwhelming.....

We had it in our yard so we opened them at the end of the night (my family doesn't like to leave :) when most of the people left. The ones that were there requested that we open them so we did.

I would say it depends on how many people you are having and where you are having it - if you said 20 people at your home - that would be about what 8-10 gifts - then I might do it at home while people were there - but write down what DD got. If it is a lot of people and not at home I would wait until you get home to open them - much easier to keep track of everything.
