1st blood test?
are you supposed to get a blood test as soon as you get your bfp? when i called my doc to tell her i got my bfp - she said its not necessary and she'd do one at my first appt. which will be at 6 weeks. she said my POAS were confirmation but i'm worried - oh boy here i go!!! thank you
she said i could go to their lab if i wanted to but i didn't feel like travelling into city - it was freezing

Re: 1st blood test?
I remember when I was preggo with Kevin - I called and thought the same and they made me wait until 2 missed periods. I nver had a blood test to confirm. They said a postitive home pregnancy test was enough!

Re: 1st blood test?
6 weeks is fine to do bloodwork. My opinion is that it's not always good to get tests done when you're very early on. The hcg levels are lower & that will just cause unnecessary stress & worry.

Re: 1st blood test?
I never had a blood test done to confirm for either of my pregnancies.
I would try not to worry since she's going to see you at 6 weeks, usually most docs won't see you until 8 weeks.

Re: 1st blood test?
I wouldn't worry, some docs send you right away, some don't do until your 1st appt.
Mine does them right away, only because my insurance requires a blood test confirmation for him to get paid
God forbid dr's dont' get their money!

Re: 1st blood test?
My doc gave me the order for the blood tests, but pretty much just told me to have them done sometime before my next appointment which was about 10 weeks along.

Re: 1st blood test?
I went for my bloodtest around 6 weeks. My Dr. didn't seem like it was a big hurry to get me to the lab, either.

Re: 1st blood test?
i called the OB yesterday expecting to have to go in and get a blood test, but she actually said that they don't see patients until 8 weeks. at that point they do the first ultrasound.
i don't think they do the blood test at all

A lot of Drs. won't see patients until 8 weeks. Maybe they will send you for the bloodwork after the ultrasound appointment. I thought bloodwork was pretty standard, not only do they check for numbers in relation to the baby, but also for your overall general health too.

Re: 1st blood test?
thanks. this makes sense. I was there 7 months ago for a complete checkup- she had done a whole bunch of tests because i told her i was hoping to conceive within the year.

Re: 1st blood test?
i went to the OB doc at 5 weeks, and he g ave me a rundown of bloodwork to get before my 2nd visit. I would call , make an appt. and see what they tell you.

Re: 1st blood test?
I never had one to confirm, but I waited until 10 weeks for both pregnancies - but it was mostly out of laziness to get to the lab. If they can do it in the office - it's MUCH better for you!
