1st grade grading question
how do you grade student work? I normally put stars on their work and if there are lots of mistakes I will put a check. The first grade report card is: N-Needs improvement not meeting grade level requirements S-Satisfactory, usually meeting grade level requirements G- Good, meeting or sometimes exceeding grade level 0- Outstanding, consistently exceeding grade level requirements
Anyway I get a parent e-mail today asking "what is implication of the star or any other symbols you may be using to grade the work that is sent home?"
How do I respond to this? I mean this is first grade!! Do they want me to put A's, B's and C's on their papers?
How do you all "grade" papers?

Re: 1st grade grading question
I teach K and I basically do the same thing. If I give a check, I usually write something...like "please do your best work" or "you can color more carefully".

Re: 1st grade grading question
We use a number system, so 4 is above grade level, 3 is at grade level, 2 is reaching grade level and 1 is below. I also use 1-4 rubrics for projects and writing. Then with math tests, I convert percentages to numbers.

Re: 1st grade grading question
sounds like you have a parent who will be watching your every move
I teach first grade and all tests (yes, we have quite a few each month) are graded with a percentage. I give stars on HW if it is 100% correct. If not I check what is right and circle what is wrong. We also use the 1-4 system on the report card-- i think all NYC schools do.
We let parents know 0-59 is a 1 60-69 is a 2 70 -88 is a 3 89 - 100 is a 4
I didn't make this up, in case you're
