1st prenatal appointment
We are going for our 1st prenatal appointment on Tuesday, any advice? Anything I should ask? What do they do? Will I get an ultrasound? I will be about 6 weeks.
I am soo anxious and nervous, I need to be sure everything is okay. Thanks a bunch and for helping a new nervous mommy!

Re: 1st prenatal appointment
We had an internal ultrasound (be prepared to be violated) to see the baby and the heartbeat.
Also got the bag of goodies....coupons, info, etc. Prenatal vitamins too.
Have a list of questions: foods to avoid, what medications you are allowed to take, travelling restrictions.
I was told, if there was any bleeding to call ASAP or cramping/pain that was too severe to walk or talk through

Re: 1st prenatal appointment
I just want to tell you this because it upset me so much- I had my first appointment at 6 weeks 5 days and they did an internal ultrasound and could not find the heartbeat (or the baby) all they saw was the sack.
I was so upset and had to wait a week to go back. We went back a week later an saw the heartbeat, but that week waiting was so awful!
Anyway, I found out later that it was common not to see the heartbeat so early- so be prepared if you don't see it.
Good luck!!

Re: 1st prenatal appointment
I agree with Stephanie....sometimes 6 weeks is too early. In my first PG they only saw a sac and said it was too early (but in my case, a fetus never developed which is called a blighted ovum).
I went at 7.5 weeks this time and saw the heart beating and heard it too.

Re: 1st prenatal appointment
Yeah! We are very close...
I just had my 1st prenatal last Tuesday. I was 6 weeks. They did an internal ultrasound as well, which caught me offguard since my DH came in with me and I think my feet in stirrups scared him!
We were able to see the heartbeat and the baby, didn't look like mych more than a lima bean on the screen, but it was pretty cool! otherwise, not much else happened. I am going back at 9 weeks.
Good Luck! It is truly amazing...
however, as the other ladies said, I have a friend who didn't see it at 6, and went back and saw it at 8. She is now 25 weeks, so all is good.
Take care!

Re: 1st prenatal appointment
Thank you everyone for giving me the heads up on the 6 week ultrasound!
MrsM-we are close, we are in this together and will prob go through things at same time
There is so much that could go wrong, I am more nervous than excited and that bothers me.
How did everyone get through the 1st trimester worries? any thoughts how to put your mind at ease?

I was the same way... I would cry and get so cranky before every apt. I was so worried, and felt guilty for not enjoying my pregnancy...
Then someone recommended renting the baby beat doppler..which allows to hear your babys heartbeat @ 10 weeks...as much as you want... its exactly what they use in the DR's office, and its only like 24/month..
I loved it.. I gave me n FH special bonding everynight with the baby..and put me at ease...
If you want more info let me know!

Re: 1st prenatal appointment
My first appointment was a week ago. The only thing that was done was a ultrasound. The only thing I was told was to take vitamins. I go back in two weeks for blood and another ultrasound. I was told it is a long appointment.

Re: 1st prenatal appointment
I was 8 weeks at my first appt and did not even have an ultrasound. I pretty much only spoke with a nurse, who went over lots of paperwork and told me things like what not to eat, etc. I had a few questions to ask, which were answered...given vitamins and that was pretty much it.
It was at my next appt that I was able to hear the heartbeat!
Good Luck at your appt...don't be nervous...and don't get upset if you can't hear the heartbeat...the baby is so small right now...it's going to be very hard.
