1st trimester screening
Anyone ever go though this...I am actually typing this with tears running down my face. I just got a call from my OBGYN saying the results showed a SLIGHTLY elevated level for Down Sydrome. I am 34 and this will be my 3rd child. She said it is common at my age to have this happen so I had to make my DH make an appt for me in a week for an amnio because I couldnt even speak on the phone. I am close to 16 weeks PG,
Did anyone have to go for an amnio because of elevated levels and everything turned out to be OK. I am a mess right now and could use any advice

Re: 1st trimester screening
I haven't experienced this myself, but I believe this has happened to girls on here who had the amnio and found out everything was absolutely fine!!

Re: 1st trimester screening
First, I am sorry to hear your news. I know how much we all want the best things for our children.
My levels were just above the level the lab uses to decide if someone is at risk of having a baby with down syndrome or not. I tested at 1 in 215 or 220 (forgetting which it was now), and my doctor recommended an amnio. However, I was 39 at the time, and the risk for a 39 year old is even higher than my test results, so I actually thought my results were pretty good.
I wound up skipping the amnio, mainly because I was worried about the risks and I felt I would have the baby whether he/she has Downs or not. It was a hard decision though, and a very personal one I think. Everyone has to decide for themselves.
Hopefully, your darling child is just fine. Remember, even if you have a higher risk, the numbers are still in your favor.

Re: 1st trimester screening
This happened to my friend twice she is the same age as you. Her first she had when she ws 32 her second 34. Both her kids are perfectly fine.
She was hysterical the first time hearing this news and was really calm the second time around. Doctors are being extra careful and the testing they use are very sensitive.
Hang in there and be strong for you and your little one

Re: 1st trimester screening
I had this happen to me. My chances were 1 in 160 and should have been 1 in 768. I was a wreck too. I ended up having the amnio and everything turned out fine. Just keep in mind that whatever your numbers are you have a MUCH higher lilkihood of having a baby that is OK. My brother kept saying that he would bet on 1 in 160 odds anyday for the lottery...so try to think of it like that. If you have any questions, please ask me. I just went through it and couldnt relax until I got the results.

Re: 1st trimester screening
First some . Second, the things to remember with the 1st trimester screening are, 1) it is only a screening, it is not a diagnostic test & 2) every single woman that gets pregnant has 1 in X chance of the baby having DS. The only thing the screen says is are you chances 1 in X-Y, or 1 in X+Z.
Of course you want the chances after the screen to be 1 in X-Y, but a slightly elevated risk could truly be 1 in X+1, it doesn't mean 1 in X+3500.
Again, those are just the probabilities.
To answer your other question, my levels at an age greater than yours were also elevated, I had an amnio and everything was normal.

Re: 1st trimester screening
I have a friend who had the same experience, and her baby girl does not have Downs. I hate these tests, they can really put you through hell. Many 's for you.
