2 Hour Glucose Test?

I went to see an Endocrinologist based on the replies to a previous post I made.

I have been sent for a 2 hour glucose test tomorrow...what should I expect?

Here's how mine went - but keep in mind that the lab I used (I'm in CA, don't worry) seemed to have no idea about non-gestational diabetes testing so I'm not sure if what they did was normal protocol or not.

Basically I went in and they took a baseline blood sample.

Then they had me drink a sugary drink (tasted like flat orange soda).

Then, every 30 minutes for the next 2 hours, they took another blood sample.

I had a 3 hour test once. They took blood every hour - I had to stay in the lab the whole time so you might to bring something to help pass the time. I felt fine through the whole thing until the very end - I got really dizzy & lightheaded. I wished I thought to bring a small snack with me for when I was done. I dont know if that's normal but just thought I would mention it.

I've done the 2 hour test. My sugar totally crashed during the test and I was falling asleep. Turned out by the last time they tested my blood my blood sugar was down to 50, which is VERY low. I was diagnosed with hypoglycemia.

Definitely bring something to do because they won't let you leave. And I agree with Christine, bring a snack or some juice with you for before you leave. Besides the fact that you'll probably be starving, you may need something to pick your sugar levels up a little. Good luck!!!!

I did it and it was miserable for me.. I started shaking as I was drinking it and if you throw it up, you have to do the test all over again.. I was shaking the whole time and had to take a sick day from work the next day.

But most people are fine.. I am just weird
