There is another post on this a few posts down.
Our district hasn't decided yet. The only district that has announced that masks are optional in the area is Plainedge. There are few in Western NY as well.
How did you hear this? I was talking to someone today and they seemed to think Plainedge will require masks. I didn't want to dispute her, so I searched their website and social media and there hasn't been anything.
The BOE has a presentation under Board Docs.
Thank you!

I think the new Governor is going to mandate masks - even though Cuomo said he couldn’t, she says she believes she can.

Re: 2021/2022 school year
Though I have a feeling that the new governor is going to mandate mask and it’s not gonna be up to the school after reading the guidelines for quarantine though I’m still leaning towards it should be optional I’m really leaning more towards it not being optional only because Someone’s decision not to mask their kid will affect my child if they have to quarantine or not and that’s when it’s not ok to make it optional.
So if I send my kid in with a mask so they doesn’t have to quarantine but the person who was positive is not masked my child will still now have to quarantine cause the other child wasn’t masked (there are other factors and rules but masks are the main point) how is that fair to my child. This is the one reason I would lean toward mask not being optional cause now someone else’s decisions will directly effect my child.

So how would that work though? Would they be keeping a chart each day of who is wearing a mask and who isn't? So lets say Johnny tests positive on Friday - do they go back to the mask chart to see if he was wearing a mask the days before to determine who has to quarantine or not? Seems like a lot of book keeping and keeping track of kids for the teachers.

Good questions I’ll have to ask this if masks are voluntary. But my thinking is it’s going to be blanket policy so if masks are optional they will treat every case as no one was wearing masks and That will Suck. I really am ok masks being voluntary but there are times where I need my child to no risk being quarantine if that means she needs to wear a mask great I’ll have her wear one. But If it’s not going to make a difference cause if someone who positive didn’t wear one then why make her wear one.

The new quarantining rules are pretty lax compared to last year. They need to be 3 feet apart. If they are, it does not matter if they are wearing a mask or not. If they are closer than 3 feet then if both are wearing masks, no quarantine. Districts can allow students while seating during instruction not wear masks and when they need to work closely (circle time, lab partners, walking in the halls) have them masked.

My district stated that if 3 feet apart, quarantining would be required if the child testing positive doesn’t have a mask on and regardless if anyone else does.
And if the positive child is wearing a mask then only maskless children three feet or less have to quarantine.
Is it less than 3 feet or exactly 3 feet? Because I guess that extra inch matters

What if a child steps his foot a few inches to the right when getting up to use the bathroom? What if it's 2 feet, 9 inches because someone slides their desk a bit to the left? Who is policing any of this through out the school day? In a class of 24 kids?

Glue? lol. who knows. It's so stupid. So last year Covid travelled 6 feet but this year it only travels 3 feet. I guess the virus is getting lazy.

I’m with all of you the quarantine rules fing stupid. They need to get rid of them all together IMO.
I have said this before I am ok if you want to make a whole class be online for 10 Days of positive in class but the whole class shouldn’t have to be made to be in a house where they can’t leave for 10 days.
Or have a test out option.
They are not contact tracing outside of school or maybe if your job reported it so why are we only doing in certain situation. Yes I get people should do the right thing and quarantine on their own if they know exposed but we all know people don’t do the right thing so why only in certain situations and the one situation where there hasn’t been a huge spread

I didn’t think anything different. But the way people were acting at the school board meeting I watched last night were acting worse then children. Cutting people off cursing at them. Yelling at children all for what. Did they really not know this was coming??!!
And why did the school boards even bother hosting meetings before the new governor was in office.

Yeah a few of us were talking about this today actually- like why were they wasting time with coming up with all these plans etc Such a waste. Our district is having a meeting next week I think- I guess they were waiting for the new gov's guidance- smart!

Like I said previously, she can mandate masks for the rest of our lives (and most likely will) but it is not going to be strictly followed. A few parents I know are already telling their kids to walk in with it then pull it down at your desk. Teachers are going to get tired and cannot spend all day enforcing this. It is also another deterrent to getting kids vaccinated. But it is what it is. Curious if the holy “guidance” will include requiring masks outside too or during gym and sports.

This to me is wrong. I get not agreeing but to tell kids to out right disobey rules is not ok!!!
I am sure if it constantly happens they will be sent home for not following rules.
Children should not be fighting this fight.
Parents should be going to the politicians!!

While I do not disagree with you and am a “rule follower,” I think people are starting to realize that the only way out is NOT complying. Parents feel VERY strongly about this.

The problem is the politicians don't give a shit what their constituents say or want... they only care about their own agenda. And power, of course. I won't tell my DD to not comply, but last year the kids kind of starting not complying on their own and the teacher looked the other way. I can see that happening again.

Totally agree. Also totally unfair to put this on teachers to enforce when they want to protect themselves and their own families.

2021/2022 school year
Little kids don’t care. Mask, no mask. It’s parents who are acting like chicken with temper tantrums at meetings and on social media. I feel for the kids who just want to attend school in a couple of weeks but their mom is now pulling them out to homeschool to try to stick it to the school. The majority of kids want to be in school with their peers. Parents have turned it into their own battle and vendetta. People need to get a grip.

Just like that the Governor just mandated masks.
All the arguing and disgusting behavior at school board meetings for no reason!!!
But we knew that was coming. Did anyone really think she wouldn't. I kind of liked it when Cuomo was still in and a lame duck... he left it up to the schools at least.
I didn’t think anything different. But the way people were acting at the school board meeting I watched last night were acting worse then children. Cutting people off cursing at them. Yelling at children all for what. Did they really not know this was coming??!!
And why did the school boards even bother hosting meetings before the new governor was in office.
Can we blame them? They’re all fed up at this point. Like any parent that’s trying to protect their child against these draconian measures.

Wearing a mask to protect oneself is not draconian. It's shocking how people don't want to protect their kids. It's alarming.
Glad for the mandate so now ppl can stop asking.

Then put it on YOUR kids and let other parents and kids decide the best for them. Wear a mask forever, no one cares but someone needs to start standing up for these kids.

i do put it on my kid. and i question the parenting of those who don't. do what you want but people will still judge you when you are literally allowing your child to become a victim. also, i find itfunny that the people who call other people sheep are actually taking sheep medication to cure their covid. if only there was
