29 weeks and scheduled for a dental cleaning - is this ok?
I am 29 weeks and scheduled for my semi-annual dental cleaning tomorrow. I went right before I got pregnant in September.
I didn't think anything of it, but my parents think I should postpone, something about bacteria being released into your bloodstream during routine cleanings.
Has anyone asked their ob about this? Is it safe to get a cleaning in the third trimester? Should I just postpone? I don't think I have any problems, nothing hurts or anything. Now I am concerned!!
UPDATE
Thanks everyone! Since I'm in my 3rd Trimester I was too freaked out, so I canceled. Seeing my OB on Friday, so I will ask then, but I feel like since I went just before getting pregnant it's safe to wait until after I give birth.

My OB said it was safe. I went at 19 weeks. My dentist actually asked me to get a note from my doctor saying it was ok. Definitly ask your OB if you are concerned. Also let you dentist know youre pg, they may want a letter from you Dr.

Yep. Most docs actually say it's advisable to have a cleaning during the pregnancy.

I got a cleaning at 19w and it is really important that you go and get cleanings regularly while pregnant. I will warn you that your teeth will be much more sensitive. The dentist had to be extra gentle since she wouldnt use anything to numb my gums.

Re: 29 weeks and scheduled for a dental cleaning - is this ok?
My old dr. told me that I should make sure to go but wait until after my first tri, and I was due for an appointment like the week after we got pregnant, so I put it off, and have been so busy that I've kept putting it off, and probably will until after the baby is born, because I feel a little leery about the bacteria issue too, and I do brush and floss very well so I think another 3 months really won't be a big deal. Whatever you feel comfortable with is the right decision for you.

I have bad gums and go 4x a year - I've been once this pregnancy and will go again (I spaced it out 4 months instead of 3) before baby is born.

Yes it is safe. I've asked my ob several times and they encourage dental health. Ive even had dental work done this pregnancy!

Dental hygiene is very important during pregnancy. It's safe to have a cleaning done. I even had a cavity filled sometime around the end of the 1st tri / beginning of the 2nd tri. My OB said it was fine.

I had a cleaning last week, and I have another scheduled for three weeks before baby is born....my OB hasn't said it isn't allowed....just no xrays or novacaine, etc.

Cleanings are very important when pregnant-I went for one in my first trimester and have another one in a few more months.
I wouldn't get xrays and would ask my ob before getting any fillings, etc but the cleaning itself is important.

Yes, it is safe. I actually needed dental work as well (both in my 3rd tri) and my dentist called the OB to get clearance for what they were planning to use.

Re: 29 weeks and scheduled for a dental cleaning - is this ok?
I just went for a cleaning last week at 19 weeks --- my dentist said ideally he would love for me to come once a trimester, but insurance doesn't cover that so nevermind that.
Oh and I got the great news of 5 visible cavities and pregnancy gingivitis!
