2nd Grade Library- Book Suggestion

Hi Ladies,

I have a demo lesson to do for a library position on Monday, the interview was this afternoon. Now I need to find a GREAT book for 2nd graders that lends itself to a good extension lesson. I'm a tech person in the district already so I'd really like to do my lesson on the SMART board. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

PS I don't usually post on this board b/c technically right now I am a staff developer not a teacher, sooo hopefully I'll be joining you more next year! Chat Icon

Re: 2nd Grade Library- Book Suggestion

my Tech guy at school just did a tech lesson using the book The Journey of Oliver K. Woodman with my first grade class. THe book is about about a girl Tameka invites Uncle Ray, who lives in South Carolina, to visit her in California. Uncle Ray writes back that he can't come, but he is sending a friend, Oliver K. Woodman, a life-size, hinged wooden man that Uncle Ray has carved. Ray puts Oliver by the road with a note asking travelers who pick him up to send postcards to Ray along the way. People are happy to oblige; postcards come from Arkansas, New Mexico, and Utah, revealing a diverse array of travelers and responses to Oliver. Oliver finally arrives, and the journey comes full circle when Tameka's family and Oliver travel (this time by air) to visit Ray.

Anyway, he set up the smartboard and used the program Mapmaker to follow Olivers jouney and as they read about each state a kid would go up the the smartboard and highlight it. Once the story was over he went to google earth and showed the kids what the places actually looked like and what his possible route was, it was a great lesson since we had just finished learning about the states.

Thanks so much! I'm going to go get that book tomorrow at the library! Chat Icon

I'm also thinking about doing The Relatives Came by Cynthia Rylant. Not sure if anyone knows the story but I think it will make the summer connection that I'm looking for.

I'm thinking that as an extension we can:
Talk about the upcoming summer vacation and how they will be spending it.
Then read the story.
Next we can identify key events and retell in sequence. I'll scan some images in so we can do that on the SMART Board.
Finally we can make connections between the students and the text using a graphic organize on the SB.

Any advice or suggestions would be great! I'm sure they will be antsy next week, especially b/c they can't check books out anymore but hopefully they chose a relatively good class. Chat Icon

I've done a library lesson with Owl Moon on the Smart Board with united Streaming. Play the video and play without the sound. Stop the movie in certain spots and ask students to write the text based on the picture. You can write the text on the smartboard and print out each page and staple it to make it a book. Then read the original and their version and discuss how close they are and how well the illustrator did capturing the text of the author.

Owl Moon is probably a bit young for end of the year 2nd graders, but you could find other Caldecott book - Smoky Night woudl be cool (if it's on US), but the subject matter might be too controversial for a demo lesson.

Jan Brett books are good for this level. Comet's Nine Lives is a summery book. I like Cynthia Rylant too!

good luck! what school?
