Book recommedations for 4th/5th grade
I am tutoring a 2nd grade student who is reading at a 4th/5th grade level...I am still getting to know her and am starting her off with books like, Polar Express and Thank You, Mr. Falker...Can you guys recommend any other books just like these??
Thanks for your help!

Any Patricia Pollacco book...
I would still stay with picture books. I was going to suggest some chapter books but since she's in 2nd grade, you still have to keep her attention. I think the picture books with more difficult words will work well with her.

How about Charlotte's Web?
If you look on Amzaon, it will tell you the reading level of the books.

There is a great book called Frindle that I love and when I student taught in 2nd grade I read it to them during DEAR time, and then quite a few kids ended up reading it themselves.

Cynthia Rylant has a series called Mr. Putter and Tabby.
We have lots of them in my library.

I would make sure that it is a book that she can comprehend, and something that is of interest to her. There is a big difference between a 2nd graders maturity level and that of a 5th grader. You want to make sure that she is still only reading about things that concern her. She does not have to get into all the "problems" that the older children do. I would stick with picture books. Many of them are def. on a higher level reading.

Also, I like Mr. Putter and Tabby as well, but if she is reading on a 4th grade level, I believe these will be too easy for her.

Re: Book recommedations for 4th/5th grade
Thanks Girls. I am def. sticking with the picture books because I thought of her attention span...although her mother makes her read chapter books. I actually have her read these books outloud to me and than I question her throughout for comprehesion...
Thanks for your suggestions..keep them coming please..

Re: Book recommedations for 4th/5th grade
I would be careful about subject matter, since your encroaching on some more serious stuff. Also, reading at a 5th grade level is different from UNDERSTANDING at a 5th grade level, so the material should be lighter.
Try Animal Ark, The Disney Fairies (Trouble with Tink), the color/seasonal fairies books (Holly the Christmas fairy). Frindle, the Report Card, the Lunchroom something by Andrew Spinelli might be cute.
