Samantha Rose - 2/2/09
After all the anxiety and being scared out of my mind, I had a great delivery experience. Due to my GD, my OB wanted to induce me at 39 weeks rather than let me go to my due date which was this past Monday.
Sunday night I checked into the hosptial around 9:00 pm. I got hooked up to the monitors and they started an IV. My strep B also came back positive and they started me on an anitbotic. They checked my cervix and I was only fingertip dialated. At 10:00pm, they inserted the cervidil told me I wasn't allowed to pee for 2 hours ( ). They gave me an ambian at 11:00pm to help me sleep, but I only got 2 hours of sleep. I was awake the rest of the night having mild contractions.
At 7:00 am, they took the cervidil out, and let me get up, go to the bathroom, and shower. 8:15am they checked me and I was 2cm dialted, and they also broke my water (THAT HURT!) they also had started the Pitocin at that time to. By 8:30, I was having pretty strong contractions, and they were right on top of eachother. The nurse said they were 2 minutes apart, but they seemed much closer than that. By 9:15am the contractions were VERY strong so my husband begged me to get the epidural then and I agreed. I have to say, the person that invented the epidural - GENIOUS!!! I was scared of having it administered, but it was nothing really. I think it helped that they let my husband be there... I know some hosptials don't allow the husbands to be in the room. Within a few short minutes, I wasn't even feeling the contractions anymore and was actually on the phone talking to my family and sending text messages.
At 10:30 am, they checked me again and I was 4cm and I think she said 90% effaced. I was able to sleep on and off during the next couple of hours. At noon, I was already at 7cms. By 12:30-12:45, I started feeling intense pressure and I told the nurse. She said it was just the baby getting into position. At 1:00pm I told her I felt like the baby wanted to come. She told me she would check me again but didn't think I was ready since I was only 7cm less than an hour before. When she checked, she said "yup, you're 10cm and ready to push" I had a moment of panic and then the shakes took over. I remembered from my childbirth class that was normal. At 1:19 I started to push, the baby was already really low. The contractions started coming pretty quickly at this point and by 1:40 the Dr. came in and at 1:58pm, my precious little girl came out! 6lbs 11oz and 19.5 inches long. And yes... I did poop on the table, probably more than once, but really, you don't care about that at all. My husband was AMAZING, he held one leg for me, the nurse the other and he watched his daughter being born. The most amazing experience of his life.
My labor progressed so much faster than I had anticipated and it was NOT the horrible experience I thought it would be. Giving birth was always one of my biggest fears in life, and I cannot believe I actually did this! I can honestly say, this has been my greatest accomplishment ever! We are completley in love with this little girl.
My recovery has also been a breeze. I didn't tear or need an episomity, but did get a small cut on the inside that required 2 stitches. I couldn't have asked for a better experience.

Congrats on your beautiful baby!!!
Thanks for sharing your story. I am only 16 weeks but birth is one of my big fears too. It's great to read about a "pleasant" birthing story.
