4 months old - horrible napper

Am I doomed? Is this how he will always be? My DD napped for 2 or 3 hours at a time at this age. While he sleeps great at night, he is a terrible napper. I seriously feel like I spend the majority of my day trying to get him to fall asleep.Chat Icon

I could have written that myself!

I always say it takes me as long to get him to fall asleep for a nap as the nap lasts.........it's exhausting.

I have no advice because DS is my first but I feel your pain!Chat Icon

Re: 4 months old - horrible napper

DS was like that. Great napper until 3 months…horrible napper until 7.5 months. Then around 8 months he found his groove, and now he naps at 9:30-11 and 3:30-5. the PM nap isn’t always a definite depending on our day if he napped in the car, etc. But I just tried to keep with a schedule. For at least 1 months he almost NEVER napped, I was dying! Then for a few months he took 3 30-45 minute naps, which to me just wasn’t working. So I just kept trying and eventually he figured it out!

Re: 4 months old - horrible napper

DD has always been a great sleeper at night but up until really recently she would only take a bunch of little cat naps (30-45mins) - I always figured I would take the good night sleeper over a good napper

BTW: nowadays she takes at least 45 min naps, but some are as long as 2 hours, so your lo may nap longer soon enough

Re: 4 months old - horrible napper

I feel your pain! My son used to be an excellent napper. Would take 2- 2 hour naps a day and then a 1 hour nap in the late afternoon. Then when i went back to work, it all changed!!! Chat Icon

Now his naps vary. they could be an hour and a half or they could be 30 minutes. Some days are better than the others.

He's also sleeping horribly at night... Chat Icon

Not sure how long ago you went back to work, but wanted to let you know the SAME thing happened to us!
When I went back to work his whole schedule went out hte window, he wouldnt nap, he wouldnt sleep at night, it was worse than having a NB. But after a few weeks for us, he started back to sleeping at night, and eventually his naps got back to normal!

Re: 4 months old - horrible napper

I feel so bad...I cursed at him.Chat Icon . But when he finally fell asleep in my arms I apologized and we made up.Chat Icon . I get so frustrated and then feel so bad because he's such a good boy - just hates to sleep during the day!

Glad I'm not alone and glad there is some hope for the future! I feel like my DD was a great napper from the start...especially by 4 months. Thanks!

ETA: I just read what I wrote. I didn't call him a bad name, just cursed for him to *$& go to sleep!!Chat Icon Chat Icon

Todd Jr is a terrible napper to, he will sleep for like an 1/2 hour, maybe an hour during the day. He sleeps great at night, I don't understand the short naps either....Chat Icon

Re: 4 months old - horrible napper

MY DS doesn't nap well either anywhere from 15 mins-3hours. He sleeps fabulous at night and isn't cranky when he doesn't nap. So the way I have handled it - whatever he does during the day is great as long as he is sleeping at night.

Good point! But what do you do with him during the day? I run out of places to put him, then end up walking around with him in my arms most of the day. I am so lucky my 2 yr old DD is so independent, but I still feel so bad for her having to play on her own a lot of the day!

He plays alot on his activity blanket; we go for a walk; he also hangs out in his boppy pillow on the couch or on our bed if i need to do things in the room He doesn't like to be held alot he loves to kick around and be free.
