4 y/o and doc appoinment with shots question
So, DS has his 4 year checkup next week. He will start getting his immunizations that are required before kindergarten at this appointment. Do you/should I warn him ahead of time about the shots? What do you guys do?

Re: 4 y/o and doc appoinment with shots question
Based upon my experience, I'd say nothing...
The day my older DD was going for her 4 year check-up, I told her about the appt as we were walking home from school (in fact, I probably only said "maybe" there'd be shots...). Well, she cried the ENTIRE way home. So much so that the crossing guard brought her a bouquet of lollipops the next day. OK, meanwhile, she wasn't even due for any shots as we discovered.
Six months later, she had strep and I had to bring her for a follow-up and at that time my doctor pulled me to the side and said she'd be due for shots before K. I said, "Go for it." We said nothing, he returned with the stuff, she cried for 30 seconds and that was it. Shock and awe is the way to go!

I think you are right. I mentioned the POSSIBILITY of shots last night NEXT FRIDAY and poor DS was so upset by it he couldn't go to sleep. SO, I think I will table that discussion and let it just happen next Friday as it will. Thank you for your advice!

Re: 4 y/o and doc appoinment with shots question
dumb question from a mom of a younger child.
Why is it so tramatic? AJ wouldn't even know what a shot is at this point and wouldn't know to be afraid of it. I could literally tell her "AJ we're gonna go get your shots tomorrow" and she'd probably just be confused but not scared.
Where do the kids learn that shots = pain? I don't want AJ afraid of shots or doctors. But I really don't want to lie to her. I literally hated my father for days after I got shots. I would tell him I couldn't trust him. I would hold it against him that he wasn't honest with me about the visit. That only happened a few times. Generally he learned to be honest with me.
I see AJ is a lot like me. So I think you mom's of older kids could really provide great insight on this!
TIA

Devin was never scared of shots and didn't know what they were UNTIL his 3 year checkup when he got two shots. He remembers that appointment and is terrified of having to get more shots. Up until that point, you are right, he never knew the difference or what the word "shots" entailed.

I'm not sure WHY, but I will say my DS never acted afraid of shots till he was around 3 1/2 or close to 4. Now he is 5 and petrified. Meanwhile my 2 yr old DD has no clue.

Re: 4 y/o and doc appoinment with shots question
ah I see ok..
Now I do feel stupid!
AJ has no shots until 4. I actually called to be sure. At 3 there are no shots. So yes, I see that after her 4yr visit she'll hate them.
So for AJ at least she'll be in ignorant bliss until 4. But I get it. She hates seeing Qtips because she got tested 3 times for the flu in a month period (one was finally positive)
Anyone ever try to use the old "We're getting shots but afterwards we're getting ice cream" idea.. does it work?

They told me that DS would not get any shots at his 3 year check up, but turns out he did. Something that he needed as an infant but did not have stock of then or something like that. That is the appointment he remembers.

Man I'd be ticked if that happened!
I had them check last two times. Her 2yr visit and again when she was sick. I'm one of 'those' moms tho. "Tell me now I hate surprises"
Tell you now, if they want to give her shots they are S.O.L. I do not allow shots without warning. Not on my shift! hahaha She's gone this long without, she can wait. I hate shots more than she does. Not for pain but for other reasons.
