40 year olds with wonky periods come in

so my 40th is around the corner, and my gyn told me my period would start getting weird. i missed one a few months ago, got my hormones tested and lo and behold my AMH (ovarian reserve) is very low.

my question to you is, are your periods starting to act weird? i.e., start, stop, start a few days later? or miss a month?

Yes! I turned 40 last year and my periods are ALL over the place. Sometimes, I skip a month, sometimes it comes within a week of just having it, sometimes it lasts longer than a week, etc...Good Times.

Re: 40 year olds with wonky periods come in

Welcome to Peri-Menopause.

I was on the pill more so to regulate my cycle and my periods still got wonky.
I'm off now because of high BP and blessedly have not gotten it for a few months, but I am also 48. I am so hoping that I am done.

My periods have ALWAYS been weird. From the time I first got it at the ripe age of 16! Chat Icon
I'd go for months without a period. MONTHS.
No rhyme or reason.
The only thing that regulated me was having my DD 4 years ago.
Suddenly they were like clockwork for a while and it shocked me.
I had never had that before.
But they are starting to get a bit irregular again. Not as bad as before I had my daughter, but they are never on time or anything. ALways a few days here, a few days there.
Who knows.

that would've driven me crazy.

my whole life i've had extremely long heavy periods. now they've lightened up significantly and i'm like "oh so this is what its like to not bleed like a pig every month!"

I am on the pill and I get my period whenever at this point. I used to get it like clockwork about three days into the inactive pills. Now it comes even before I get to the inactive pills! My doctor says definitely perimenopause. She said to stay on the pill though, because its likely keeping the hot flashes at bay for now. I am 44.

Re: 40 year olds with wonky periods come in

I have always had very normal periods. They are still normal. I will be 41 on June. I have noticed that my hair is starting to fall out more(luckily I have lots of it) my skin sucks(wrinkly and dry and just generally looking like crap) and my breasts are getting sore more often. I'm assuming my hormones are out of whack

my period was 5 days late this month.

well if we're going to be on the topic of general downward decline into the 40s, i'll add that since i had laproscopic surgery last year for an ovarian cyst and they blow your abdomen up with gas, mine is still not back to normal, and i refuse to believe its because i'm turning 40. i'm blaming it on the surgery!!! i want my flat stomach backChat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: 40 year olds with wonky periods come in

Not 40 yet (will be 38 in July) and my period is almost always on time. Exactly 14 days after I ovulate. But my question is, before you started to miss periods, or have them become a little more sporadic, did you notice them changing in amount?

For the past 8 months, every month it lasts for 3 days. Maybe 4. Day 1 is light. Day 2 Light to medium. Day 3 - 4, just a liner. Never. NEVER in my life was it this light and fast. I have also noticed that right before I ovulate, I feel anxious. Also the same goes for the day it comes and then once it's over. Like I FEEL the hormones changing within my cycle!

Anyone feel this with the beginning of peri menopause? I get statistics from the Dr. But never really asked real women what they have experienced.

A little background: I was told I will go through menopause earlier then the norm and I think it's starting now.

I know I'm digging this thread of the grave...

How long should you go without a period before seeing the doctor?

I'm almost 39, but childfree and now I've skipped a whole month. I KNOW I'm not pregnant so what the? Lately I feel like I've been hot flashing (what I would think it would be, just have periods of time when I get warm.)

DH of course says maybe its not peri-menopause, maybe its something really serious. I just think since I'm childfree I'm 2-3 years ahead since I never had those times without a period (as someone would have when pregnant.)

How long is too long? When would you see a dr?

You should go. They will check your hormones to see where you're at. According to my gyn this can happen as you approach/into the 40s so I wouldn't panic but since you missed (just like I did) it's a good idea to get checked out. Chat Icon

Mine have actually been more regular since I had DS when I was 38 (I'm 44 now). I keep track using an app and it's pretty accurate. One thing I noticed since having DS 6 years ago is that the day before I start, I get a headache (which never happened before) and now they're *super* heavy and I pass huge clots (sorry TMI!). As I get older, nothing has changed with my periods but I noticed my weight increasing (even though food/exercise hasn't changed) and I noticed other Peri-menopause symptoms.

I am 42 and have a period completely normal every 28 days.

Everyone is different and 40 isn't a magic number where that day the world changes.

I'm the same way, though I had my last child at 41. My periods were like clockwork after having my kids, but were SUPER heavy and horrible. Weight gain, moodiness and occasional hot flashes too. I finally went to my GYN in May to talk about it and got a Mirena placed in July, which has helped tremendously. I haven't had a period since September and even that was very light. At least I have one less thing to worry about for now! Perimenopause is definitely not fun!!!
