Just for kicks a choice

If you had the money to do one of these two things to your house what would you do?

Keep in mind that we are assuming they cost the same even though they don't.

Finish your basement
Install CAC

Ok, those two choices...which do you think you would enjoy more/improve your home more.

Re: Just for kicks a choice

That is such a hard one and I honestly don't know what I would do.

CAC is the best and every house should have it. But - having a basement that is finished is also huge. Do you have children now where you would be using the basement for a playroom or something?

Chat Icon Gosh....that is tough. If I had to chose right now, I'd go with the finished basement, assuming some great fruniture pieces would be included. Chat Icon

If I had to chose last week during that crazy heat wave....well, come on. I was dying for CAC then. Chat Icon Were'nt we all. Chat Icon

that's a tough one

DH and I say that the very 1st thing we would put in a house was CAC (assuming it didn't have it already).

a finished basement is really nice too though.

CAC- my Dad always says it was the best money he ever spent

all summer the 3 of us kids used to be in our own rooms with the window a/cs running

and once he put CAC we were able to use the whole house all year long!

A finished basement. I rather have more room. I would use that more months of the year than I would CAC.

Re: Just for kicks a choice

A finished basement.
You can hang down there when it is super hot because the basement is normally always cooler.
Plus, you have it all year round.

And CAC will create extra an extra expense, higher electric bill.

By the way, my husband does this for a living. If you want CAC, get it done in the fall or winter, they usually have better deals.

Re: Just for kicks a choice

depends - if i didnt need the living space, CAC - if i felt that my home was too small and I needed the basement, then I would do that.

Easy... basement.

I can count on one hand how many times a year we really need the AC, but we would use a finished basement, practically every day.

CAC hands down.
Our house is the first place I ever lived w/o CAC. I didn't realize how much I'd miss it. For me its not about being cooler because I love summer but I don't like how the house gets humid in the hottest months. We use wall a/c's sparingly & have two dehumidifiers so I don't know how much more we'd actually spend on electric.

We finished 1/3 of our basement when we moved in. DH uses it, I rarely go down there. I grew up on a slab & to me it seems weird hanging out undergroundChat Icon . Like someone else said, it is cooler down there in the summer, but you've got to add heat or you can't really use it in the coldest months.

CAC... we did just that. We will be finishing the basement this winter.

It makes more sense to do CAC first anyway because, depending upon the style of house, walls need to be damaged and repaired and that might as well be done before other cosmetic work is done.

We don't have a basement, so I'd go with the CAC (which we already installedChat Icon ).

ETA: I just heard that if you have a finished basement it can't be considered in the total square footage of our house. That actually might be an advantage with regards to taxes....

Re: Just for kicks a choice

If it were me, I would have to say CAC, b/c we don't have a big basement to finish (only what was added with an addition)

but like some have said, it's cooler in the basement in the summer. All my friends in my neighborhood would come over to hang out in our finished basement on the really hot days.

Re: Just for kicks a choice

CAC - for us, that's a necessity, not a choice.

Basemant - nice but more a want than a need. If we have enough space elsewhere we could make do without.
