Closing on Thursday !!! UPDATE! Looking for Patchogue neighbors
I am excited and nervous. Alot of people are saying that you have to walk with your check book and be prepared to sign my life away. I am nervous that they are going to ask me to write checks for outrageous extras. That is confusing me. Did anyone else have to write checks for unexpected things ??? Besides oil, taxes.

We didn't have to write a check for anything since we were actually getting money back.
Oil and Taxes however, did deduct our $$$ back by a decent amount.

First, Congratulations!!
As far as having to write extra checks, we didn't. I think people just like to exaggerate the entire process b/c it was so stressful for them  Our closing was a breeze - in and out within an hour. Our good faith estimate was pretty accurate.

Agreed! The sellers wrote us a check. They stayed a few days after closing!

Your lawyer should definitely give you a list of what checks you'll need to write out. I would say bring the entire checkbook because one amount might need to be split two ways and they may ask you to write out two checks instead of one but other than that you should be fine.
When we closed on our co-op in 2001 we wrote out checks in the exact amount we expected to so no worries!

Our laywer told us how much the closing cost would be and we had to bring a certified check for that amount. He didnt get final numbers from the bank so he told us we'd have to write a few checks and told us the most to expect. It wasnt anything crazy. We wrote about another 3k from our personal checkbook.
You'll be so happy once its over and excited! congrats!!
ETA: We also got a check (a small amt)from the sellers.

Congrats!
Bringing your checkbook is just an "in case" thing. Your lawyer should have went over all your closing costs prior to closing so you should have a ballpark amount that you should bring. Sometimes though they are off by a little. I know when I tell clients what their closing costs are I always make it about $500 more than what it could be just for a cushion. Always better to have more than less. You might need your checkbook if a unforeseen adjustment came up or a charge wasn't properly put on your title bill. One closing I handled they needed to write a check out for $300, at my closing we brought too much and got money back from the sellers.

I am a litle nervous, because the good faith that we got said 9100 it had some things on it that we have already paid. With these adjustments it made it like 8700. My lawyer told me to bring one check for 6500 and another for 8500. The 8500 was for the title bill and the 6500 is for the other lawyer. Why am I cutting a check for the other lawyer????

I was so nervous about this also. I spoke with the lawyer before we went just to be clear on what was to be expected of us.
We were lucky also and walked away with a check.

Well everyone it went well. I walked away with a check and the sellers left all the window treatments and blinds. They are staying until Saturday and in exchange we didnt have to pay for the oil or the propane gas for the fireplace. I am excited but like everyone else says the house looks diff when you do your walk through. The back yard the trees had come in sooo much. I am looking forward to starting my own thing with husband and kids in tow. I am looking for Patchogue neighbors to help me get around.

Make sure you do another walk through when you get the keys on saturday and if there are any problems to contact your lawyer.

We didnt have to cut a lot of checks at closing.
We just paid the title guy and cut a check to the seller. Our attorney advised us the day before how much it would be.
