I am against leaving the kid in the car for 5 minutes( depending on age) It take seconds for something to happen so WHY risk it!
I totally agree. I am going to go off topic for a second but one of my co-workers daughters left the keys in her car for 2 minutes because she had to go grab something out of the house, she comes out and poof her car was stolen. They found her car but these things can happen.

Yes at 10 yrs old, she can listen to the radio, Id rather have that than have her wisked into a mens room to have her "maybe" see what I dont feel at that age she should be seeing, definately! I think a 10 yr old is old enough to know to not unlock the door for strangers- no difference than opening the front door-
You honstly are saying you can't understand why someone would do it? Come on....please! EITHER way something can happen. I am sooo glad that you would leave your child outside to be abducted rather than have a conversation that might prove to be a little uncomfortable.

ok now whos not being realistic here- I see plenty of kids older not babies in the car waiting for thier parents, parked in the fire zone at cvs, pizzeria.
I try not to get involved in these things when they start to escalate, but leaving a kid in the car is crazy. Don't you remember two years ago when a ten year old was left in the car at the bagel store, put it in drive and the car ran into the store.
Or, the FOUR year old who was left in the car and also threw the car into drive and drove it into someone's house.
Children should NEVER be left in cars by themselves, you just don't know what can happen in five to ten minutes.
And when was the last time you went into CVS and got your prescription and paid for it in less than ten minutes!?

Glad WE are on the same page. and as far as leaving a 10 yr old in the car for a quick run in, you know your kid- you raised them- if you dont think they are mature enough then bring them IN! you can always ask the waitress to keep an eye on your daughter if you have to go that bad!

OK - you are certainly entitled to your opinion on here, as everyone else is. However, I feel the above statement is hypocritical. If you are acknowledging that a ten year old is not a baby and can handle being by themselves in a car, why is that same 10 year old too babyish to go in the bathroom by themself or avert their eyes and quickly go into the men's room with their father???

I'm totally against leaving children unattended at any age. I'm sure the father was in e difficult situation and did what he thought was best, that is to keep his child with him. I don't think I would have allowed a 10-year old child to go alone to the bathroom or leave them alone outside of one.
As for the car - NEVER EVER would I leave them in the car alone .. forget them mistakenly making it move ... car jackings and abductions are what you have to worry about!

No read it again, all of the posts, I never said a 10 yr old is babyish or that they cant handle going the ladies bathroom by themselves- I feel that they are and it is unacceptable to expose your 10 yr old daughter to see men peeing in urinals or whatever they may see- no matter how much you try to cover their eyes you are showing them that this is something wrong and for you not too see but Im bringing you into this environment anyway, and as a 10 yr old they wont question it , ask thier friends about it or just plain be mortified that at 10 she had to go into a mens room when she sees woman and other girls going into the ladies room?
no one is going to 100% agree with everyone on here.

ETA: I'm not sure I can comprehend what visions some people have of what goes on in a men's bathroom, especially at a movie theater or say a bowling alley, but I'm sure it was fine. Plus if she lives with her father and brother, I'm sure at one time or another she would have seen a peeshee.

when you run into the gas station to pay for your gas- not everyone does full serve or uses CC,so anyway, and you have small children that have to be in car seats do you unbuckle them and take them into the gas station and then rebuckle them up and then pump your gas? do you wake them up if they are sleeping to unbuckle them, again take them inside so you can pay for the gas and then rebuckle them and pump your gas??????? just curious?
that is about 5 minutes - walking away from car, waiting to pay for gas, walk back to car
edited to say would I do this no, but I have never been in this situation , do I know of moms that do this yes, but I want to see how honest some of the moms on here that questioned the non moms on here regarding our decisions

Again - I would never leave young children in the car, but that's just me. And if they were with me and I desperately needed gas, I would use Credit Card, Debit Card, or full serve.

I don't think a child under the age of 12 should ever be left alone...under any circumstances.
There is too much that could happen in this day and age and as someone else said I would never want to be in a situation where I had to say...It was only five minutes.

honestly- each parent/ chid is different. BUT my main point is- Who are we to critique some random guys parenting skills??? Parents have a hard enough job as it is, and i think scrutinizing, and Judging someone in a situation like This (where, to me, it clearly seemed like he did not want to leave his daughter unattended) is what makes parenting even That much harder. In that case, he's damned if he does, damned if he doesnt.

I appreciate the honesty. Welp I guess Im out of the norm cause well I dont know for sure as I dont have a 10yr or any kids right now, that I would feel safe to run in for 5 minutes to grab something( again 10 yrs old not infants or toddlers or even an 8 yr old, as far as the bathroom if I was a guy I would wait till I got home or have my son walk with her into the ladies room and wait close by if she was the one who had to go. I would sacrifice me waiting to go at home than bring my lil girl into a mens room.
and as someone said we dont know the exact situation , we are just giving our opionions and perspectives on the situation.

it Does make it wrong, in the Eyes of the NY State government, anyway...
CHILD ABUSE AND CHILD NEGLECT LAWS IN NEW YORK STATE
According to New York State laws, the state may take children away from parents who abuse or neglect them. This includes excessive physical punishment of a child or leaving a child unattended. New York State may interfere on behalf of the child in such situations.
People run red lights- just because they dont get 'caught' everytime, doesnt mean that they didnt break the law.
