Questions about my Job - While I'm out on Maternity
Some of you know I'm out on maternity leave  and my office has temp help to cover my desk while I'm gone.
I get 8 wks off (since I had a c-section) and I've made it really clear that I'm coming back.
The girl hired to cover for me while I'm out erased my voice mail and made it her own.
Is this right? I mean, she is only covering my desk, I am coming back - it's still my job. IMO, I don't think she should have done that.
What do you all think?
And - should I say anything?

Hmm. I don't know office etiquette, but I would think that if she is using the voicemail and people are trying to contact her, she would have to put her name on there. But then again, I don't really know. I'd still be po-ed because, hello, it's MY job. I'm territorial, I guess!

That's a good question. I think if it said she was covering, I wouldn't be as mad.

That's a good question. I think if it said she was covering, I wouldn't be as mad.

hmm, i think i'd be annoyed but is she telling people that she talks to who she is? or is she making it like you were never there? people are weird and maybe if she thinks she can make others "forget" you, she'll have your job.

I would be fuming (since she didn't say anything about covering you). Can you call your boss or something and make it sound all innocent like you checked the voice mail and are concerned that your name is off it cause you don't want people to think you left the company?

I'm in education so I'm not up on office etiquette but I would think that it should say, "Hello, you've reached Mary Smith. I'll be covering for ***** while she is out on maternity leave for the next few weeks. If you have a question or need to leave a message for either one of us please do so. I will return your call as soon as possible"

Well....I think it's fine. I started a consulting job in January and I was sitting at someone's desk who was out on a medical leave. They gave me her extension, and I changed her voicemail. I was told to forward any calls that I could not help with to the boss.
When she came back to work...they moved my desk...gave me a different phone and she got hers back. I don't think there is anything wrong with it.

I would be mad too, there is a girl in my office that is out on maternity leave and we have someone covering for her also. All she does is use her computer, she didnt change the voice mail or anything like that. She even tells people when they call she is covering for her.

I think she should have her own voicemail message. Otherwise, if she places a call and leaves her call back #, people might think they have the wrong # and call back.
My secretary was out on maternity leave and the temp secretary changed the voicemail. It didn't mention the permanent secretary. I had no problem with this.

Maybe you should mention it to you boss & ask what people are being told. Don't accuse, just say you want to make sure no one is confused.
