Christmas Present In-Laws - Vent

OK, so today DH says to me that he just found a 75.00 check that his parents gave HIM on Christmas.. I said "what, I didn't see any card or check for 75.00 when we were opening presents".. He says "Yes every year they give the three kids a SIDE gift"... I almost fell over!!!!! I never knew, He never told me, or gave me the money for our savings account!

I think this is totally unfair. I think his parents should be giving us gifts together and not him stuff on the side. My family gives us both the same... EVEN!

Oh and they gave Me an "US" gift.. a crock-pot!!! I am SO MAD RIGHT NOW!!!!! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

What do you guys think?? Would you be Mad?? How are the gifts done in your family???

of course they can GIVE him whatever they want to give, BUT I think your DH is at fault for not telling you. It really is his choice what he wants to do with it, but I don't see why he wouldn't want to add it to your savings?

Well I think that is a big part of why I am mad.. Like this was something I wasn't suppose to know about!!!! I didn't even see him open the check!!!

I agree.

But why wouldn't he deposit the checks for the kids, though? Did he just forget?

Re: Christmas Present In-Laws - Vent

My parents try to be fair with all of us, but honestly, we're their daughters. We definitely get a few more things to open on Christmas Day. They're not stingy with their Sons-in-law, but they tend to give us an extra gift or two. I think that's only natural.

i don't think there is anything wrong w/ his parents giving their son a gift. not sure why he didn't tell you but he probably thought it wasn't a big deal. IMO, he should be able to spend the money as he pleases. it is not as if he his taking money away from what both of you have earned.

my family gives to DH and I equally.

My MIL has "improved" the gifts that she gives me over the years (we started with a set of towels from the dollar store)

but, she still gives DH lavish gifts.

THats what would p!ss ME off - not really the fact that his parents gave him an extra gift. My parents give me more than they give him, and his parents give him more than they give me allllll the time.

Re: Christmas Present In-Laws - Vent

This year we sent MIL a coat. Usually DH gets something, but he did not get anything. She did call and leave a message in Spanish so I assume she was thanking him. FIL will get Leo something, then add my name to gift. My parents buy equal for me and Lee.

IMO I woudn't get so upset. It's $75 it's not like it's a thousand dollars. He probably sisn't think it was a big deal & I agree.

Re: Christmas Present In-Laws - Vent

I don't really think it is that big of a deal. It is not like they didn't get you a gift, and only got him one. I do think it is a bit odd that he didn't tell you, but not something I would get that upset about. I am not a fan of "couple" gifts, so honestly, I might be a little psyched to get some extra $ to spend on myself.

I could care less, $75 big deal. If it they were giving him a $1000, and he didn't tell me, I would have a problem with it. Like your mom never buys you stuff when you go shopping or something.

I also don't agree with you. He is their son and your inlaws have every right to give him something extra. Its not like they didn't give you anything.

My mom always gives me extra presents- its not a big deal. Gifts are not really big in our family. My b-day gifts are always much bigger than DH's. For Hannukah my mom gave us something together but then bought me a bunch of sweaters also. I don't think its a big deal. DH's parents live in another country and never give gifts to us.

However, I would be p i s s e d off at your DH for not telling you about this. How long has it been going on that you don't know? That's what would p i s s me off.

I think the issue here is that DH didnt tell you that they gave it to them - not the fact that they gave it in the first place which I think is entirely fair.

Re: Christmas Present In-Laws - Vent

My mom always does more for me, but she buys DH gifts of his own. No "US" gifts really. Once in a while.

DHs mom does more for him , which is not mcuh anyway.

I dont really care actually.

I wouldnt be mad. Maybe mad he never mentioned it, but I would let him keep the money.

I really think that it is normal for parents to perhaps give their child extra for gift-giving holidays. I do believe that your DH should have told you though.

I wouldn't be mad at the in-laws... I may be slightly annoyed with DH that he didn't tell me but who cares he is their child....

Re: Christmas Present In-Laws - Vent

this was a huge issue with both my mother, and my step-mother with my dad's mom.

My mom complained about it, my dad ignored it, then my step-mom said something, and my dad finally listened.

They were just really hurt since their parents were equal with both... I think also, because they didn't feel like they were 'good' enough or something.

All four 'sets' of our parents are equal with us.
