I cannot tell you how much it annoys me when I am like, walking to work and some guys yells at me to SMILE!!
Buddy, I am walking to work-- am I supposed to have a big a$$ smile on my face so people think I slipped something in my coffee?
It annoys me when the guy says it to me at the coffe cart, the doorman, random guys on the street-- but do you have to slow down and yell it to me out your car window???
Can I just be a serious person who does not have a goofy smile on my face on my way to work???
I have been hearing this my whole life-- people, leave me alone!!!

People have said this to me my whole life!!!! My sister too! But its just thats the way my face looks. Please introduce me to the person thats actually smiling at 9AM walking through a crowded street to go and slave away at a desk all day!

I get this too, I can't stand it.
Last week, I was getting coffee and I was talking on my cell phone (with my ear piece attached) and as I was walking out, some guy says to me "you know, people are going to think you're talking to yourself"
Okay, #1 - I'm having a conversation that doesn't involve you... AND
#2 - I don't give a rats azz what people think.

I feel your pain, but in the same way, when I'm reminded to "smile," I do it....it helps to just put things in perspective for me, and remind me that I have a reason to smile everyday when I wake up in the morning.
I love when I see others on the street smiling or at least not with a mug on their frace....

It shows a little bit of care - people looking out for one another, you know?
This morning in 7-11, I spilled some of my coffee on my shirt sleeve. I groaned and starting patting at it with a napkin, but then the guy who was working the register came running over with a tide stick and a damp paper towel! Such a nice guy....when I was paying, he wished me a "beautiful day", and I couldn't help but smile

I love this .. oh how I wish I could say it to someone!
My normal expression has always been described as "serious" or that I just look "Pizzy"  I get the "SMILE" thing ALL the time too
... or I've actually been asked if I am "having a bad day".. that I look "annoyed" or have a "scowl" on my face... which only makes me more annoyed, more mad and does make my day start off bad!

I get this ALL the freakin time. If I am on my way to work or thinking about working I WILL NOT be smiling. However, if I am on my way home from work you betcha there will be a SMILE on my face

I remember sitting on the train after finding out that a close work friend died. I had held it together for a long day at the office planning an event that we were supposed to do together. The guy next to me said "Smile!" than he said "Come on! YOu look like you lost your best friend. Smile!" I said "No, but pretty close." and put on my walkman. I'm pretty sure he won't be asking anytime soon.
I'm with you - I hate that too.

oh man, that's horrible.
I mean-- I am just a cynical person who errs more on the side of serious than goofy. I don't smile alot- I never have. And you are absolutely right-- you have no idea what happened to a person that day--- and it's none of your business.
And, it's a poor excuse at flirting to boot!
