What a horrible night! Long story about my mother's dog. **Partial UPDATE**

My mother calls DH and me at 12:45am. Her beautiful labrador (4 years old) began having another seizure (she's had about 3 her entire life) but this time it had gone on for 45 minutes and she wasn't coming out of it. She was in status epilepticus.

DH and I run over there to help her get the dog to the emergency vet (we would never expect her to do it alone emotionally or physically). We finally got her there almost 2 hours into the seizure! The vet gave her Phenobarbitol and 3 doses of valium but it didn't stop the seizures. At that point they put her in the ICU and started a valium drip just to try to knock her out and get the seizures to stop. If that didn't work they were going to do IV Phenobarb. There was nothing we could do and they sent us home.

It was so horrible to see her going through this. I used to work in a school where nearly all the children had major seizures frequently and it was like going through this all over again. We have to wait until 2pm to find out how she's doing.

We hate not knowing what she'll be like when she wakes up, which could be in a few days even. She could have so much brain damage from this. My mother doesn't even know if she could manage her on the seizure meds if we're given the chance to give them do her. It will cause her to drink, and therefore pee, often but mom has to work.

She is the sweetest lab too! I need some hugs. I barely slept last night when we got home, I took today off from work, and I keep getting teary. Send some prayers for Liberty please!

UPDATE: the vet called this morning and said that Libby woke up and is sitting up. She seems to be responding to noises and her name. He also said that the practice has been open for 35 years and they have only seen a dog have a worse seizure once before.

They ran some tests but more have to be done. Right now they think it could be one of three things: epilepsy and she will need to stay on Phenobarbitol (possible increased appetite and urination), a tick and will need a year of Phenobarb. and antibiotics, or cancer (they saw an enlarged spleen and a growth on her spine-they think the spine is benign). They are holding her through tomorrow and will do more tests.

They said we shouldn't visit b/c Libby may get depressed after. She has the blanket from our house that we carried her around in, like a stretcher. They are keeping that with her in the cage.
