Dog Spinoff: People who bring their dogs into the store
Its bad enough that people will walk their dog without a leash.
But what about the people who bring their dogs into the stores? Drug store... Grocery store... 
Just today... I was at the checkout line at Duane Reade in the city (drug store). This woman comes behind me with this HUGE dog.
I am not sure what kind of dog it was... but it was HUGE. This isn't a Paris Hilton (stick your dog in your bag type thing). Standing up... its probably taller than I am. Standing on all fours... the dog's head was higher than my crotch.
So this dog comes in... it starts sniffin me all over... and then starts sticking its nose and drooling all over the front display under the cash registers (where all the candy sits). The dog owner does nothing about this. So the next person that buys a bag of M&Ms will get a little something "extra".
I don't know about Long Island... but in Manhattan this happens ALL THE TIME.
Leave your dogs outside people! Its not sanitary! And I like dogs too... but there has to be rules about this somewhere.

Me...i do not believe dogs belong in places like this...
Not in malls or stores that have food...
ETA..it happnes but i don't think as frequently

Definitely unsanitary and gross!! I've seen people bring their dogs into the grocery store - that's just wrong !

I can tolerate very small dogs that aren't big enough to reach the merchandise.... even though thats bad enough and shouldn't be allowed.
But OMG this dog was gargantuan in size. I couldn't believe it. When i turned around... I actually felt "small".

I have 2 dogs. They stay home, where they belong. Sorry people but I don't find it "cute" to bring your dogs into stores not even in doggy bags...JMHO

I bring my dogs to stores like that- Duane Reade, CVS, etc.
I actually bring them everywhere- work, on vacation, etc.
It's a "nyc" thing I think....
I don't allow my dogs to stick their noses into the products to be sold. I think owners need to be mindful of their animals.
edited to say- plenty of people allow their kids to "handle" products- ruin them, etc and put them back... kids carry way more germs than dogs. Yet, we don't make kids stay outside.
it's an ownership/parenting issue. I don't think it should be applied to all dogs.

Looks like a Great Dane. Sweet dogs, but my god, it's the size of a pony. How did it get around the aisles?
I'm a huge dog lover, but I don't like when people bring any dogs into stores. My DH is severely allergic and we've had some scary incidents due to this.
But this has been brought up on here before and escalated into a big debate.

I have to say - I've never been a dog person before I got Molly (three months ago).
Now that I have her - I really forgot what it was like to not have a dog and I was shocked when I couldn't bring her into Target last week. It never dawned on my because she is so tiny (6 lbs) but I brought her right outside. I forgot that they have food there.
Honestly - It didn't dawn on me because to me she is so tiny and doesn't leave my arms but I can see how they shouldn't be allowed in those types of stores.

It had some trouble getting around. Anyone thats in NYC knows how small these stores can be.
Even though the dog looked different than the one in the pic... it was about the same size. Instead of asking the woman, I was actually going to ask the dog to "excuse me" after I paid and turned around to get out.

Quite honestly I think the only dog that should be aloud in ANY store is a seeing eye dog - that is it! These dogs are training never to sniff out food or people.

See I worry about people with allergies. I get allergy shots, so I am very fortunate, but for people who don't if you approach them and they don't know you have a dog, they could have a severe reaction. You have to worry about things like that. You don't want to land someone in the hospital.

I am hard pressed to believe that someone who is allergic to dogs would have a reaction from being exposed to a dog in a large environment like a CVS or Duane Reade.
They allow small dogs (and cats) to fly in-cabin on a plane- which is WAY tighter quarters. So how a drug store or any other store is worse is beyond me.

It is against the law for dogs to be near open food.
You cannot bring your dog into a restaurant or supermarket.
Yes- dogs and kids are different.
But kids also carry a lot of germs too- that was my point.
Not to compare them.
and quite frankly- for people who cannot have kids- oftentimes a pet/dog is the closest they can get to it... so I think people should maybe back off a little about it. Dog owners should be respectful to others- I never let my dogs lick/touch/snif anyone that doesn't ask, I don't let them lick/touch/snif anything in a store like CVS.

I was in the grocery store the other day and some woman had her dog in the cart with her....it was pretty gross.
not a huge dog - but not a tiny dog.
i was very happy to see the manager speak to her about it

not only that, but some people are TERRIFIED of big dogs. It's inconsiderate, IMO. I dont mind the slobber too much...I used to work in a supermarket...and dog slobber is probably the least of your worries!

I've noticed that Blockbuster has become open to dogs lately. Has anyone else noticed that? Everytime I go to one, there is at least one or more BIG dogs in there. Strange.

Since you haven't seen it happen, I can understand why you wouldn't understand, I used to think he was exaggerating. But on more than one occasion my husband has had to leave a store and take medication to get his breathing under control from being exposed to a dog in a store, where they were unexpected. We purposely avoid people's homes who have dogs and other places where they'd be expected.
And my husband had to be rushed to the hosptial after the last flight we were on someone refused to keep their dog in the carrier under the seat, which would have reduced the amount of dander floating around the cabin.
