OK Any fellow preggos on that train last night?

The train that crashed into the car, went on fire, etc...or was I the only one?

Can I say again how much I hate my commute? And yesterday was supposed to be my day off!

Re: OK Any fellow preggos on that train last night?

I'm OK today ...Im home because my back hurts really bad - the jolt of hitting the car and then stopping so fast hurt my back (which was bad to begin with...) I"m going to the chiro later today.

Took me 5 hrs to get home, would have been longer BUT DH came to Hicksville to get me so I didnt have to take the bus, thank God. MY commute how was 5 hrs long as it was Chat Icon

Here's the post I put on NFR...just to give you the story without having to retype it all.

Hi Guys - thank you!!
I'm OK, I was really worried at first on the train because I felt the big jolt of hitting the car, then immediately they hit the breaks hard but you could smell deisel fuel and something burning so I knew something was really wrong.

Then they made the announcement that the train was on FIRE and told us all to move to the back of the train. Everyone was pretty freaked out. The train started to fill with smoke in the front and smell really bad. Further back it just smelled really bad.

They went down to emergency power, which is like 2 lights on per car pretty much. Then they prety much cut the air off so it got really hot and stuff.

For about 10+ minutes they were making announcements that they were waiting for the fire department and they were trying to put the fire out with fire exstinguishers...and that we hit a car.

I had to use the bathroom twice (GROSS!!!!!!!!!) but you know PG bladders....it was so gross.

I got a seat finally in the 2nd to last car and was watching out the window and all the police and firemen were looking under the train with flashlights...and they pulled the whole exhaust pipe and muffler out from under where I was sitting on the train!

I talked to DH and he put on News12 and was updating me more on stuff that the LIRR wasnt telling us. A cop walked through the car and stopped to make sure I was OK. He made sure I wasnt in pain or feeling sick and made sure I had a cell phone. He said if you need anything to find him or call 911 - which I thought was funny, since he IS 911!

But anyway the fire dept was able to put out the fire and then they detached the destroyed train engine from the train and we went back west to Hicksville where they had busses waiting (but DH came to get me so I didn't have to take a bus).

It was pretty scary but at least they put the fire out on the train so none of us got hurt.

I watched the news when I got home and I can't believe the sight of that car and the train!!

My back is really hurting from the jolt of hitting the car and then stopping. I had a bad back to begin with but its really bad now so I have to go to my chiro. BUt overall, I'm OK and the baby is OK...but I'm not looking forward to getting on the train tomorrow.

Oh here's the article on Newsday

Train hits car in Syosset, killing driver

BY BILL MASON AND JOSEPH MALLIA
STAFF WRITERS

February 16, 2006

A Long Island Rail Road train smashed into a car that had apparently been driven onto the tracks in Syosset Wednesday night, pushing the vehicle about 1,400 feet and killing the driver, LIRR officials said.

Though the car burst into flames and scorched the locomotive, none of the approximately 800 passengers on the train were injured in the 6:35 p.m. accident, which took place 40 feet east of the Robbins Lane crossing gate.

The engineer was taken to North Shore-Long Island Jewish Hospital in Syosset for treatment of smoke inhalation. His name was not released.

"The car for some unknown reason was on the tracks," LIRR spokesman Brian Dolan said. "Preliminary reports the gates were functioning properly."

The accident was not expected to affect service Thursday morning.

The engineer had no time to halt the train, which was moving at 78 mph, said Det. Sgt. Kim Riley of the MTA police.

"All the engineer saw was the rear tail lights of the car before the collision," Riley said.

The automobile was a 1997 Toyota Camry. The driver's identity could not be determined Wednesday night, railroad officials said.

Immediately after the collision, all passengers were moved to the rear of the train, the 5:47 out of Hunters Point, to protect them from toxic smoke.

So glad you are ok. Chat Icon

I used to work in the city and Syosset is my stop. I have traveled over that crossing on Robbins lane many times!

We went into the city last night to see the Knicks game, but decided last minute to meet DH in Bayside and take the train from there (where he works). Thankfully, because we wouldn't have gotten home as easily if we had taken the train from Syosset like we normally do.

Take it east! Sending many HUGS! Chat Icon Chat Icon
