We only ask people to take off their shoes if they are very wet, muddy or snowy.
Same here... If it's been raining, or snowing, my guests consider us, and take them off. All other times, I don't force anyone to take off their shoes. But when most of them take them off, even if I tell them it's ok not to, I don't stop them either...

We do... we have really light carpets... and we keep our shoes on a mat in the foyer...
We dont ask guests to take their shoes off...however when they see our shoes off... most people usually takes theres off as well..
I dont feel comfortable asking them too..however after the baby is born and is crawling around on the floor...I might start....

We don't but we have mats before you walk in the door and right after.
My family has this. We rarely have people over, so it hasn't become an issue, but I would never ask people to take their shoes off, I'd rather they keep them under wraps. I only take mine off, b/c my feet hurt, but then I put on flip flops. ( and not when anyone is over)
I am a little surprised to hear how common this is to some people.

why would someone think to do this? I woudl assuem soemoen wouldn't want my stinky feet walking around their house.

We never wear shoes in the house. We have hardwood floors but I've found that it really cuts down on the amount of dirt.
DH got into the habit when he bought the house and the hardwood floors really needed to be redone. They had no finish on them so he walk with shoes on.
Our house is so small we only have immediate family over... MIL, FIL, my Dad, brother. I don't ask them to but when they come over they remove their shoes and I do in their house as well.

We take off our shoes, it's just habit. It cuts down on the dirt on the wood floors too... I don't ask people though, if they do they do and if they don't that's ok too....

No I would not ask someone to take their shoes off- ewwwwwwwwww Please keep them on- I will be vacumming the floor and cleaning the bathroom after you leave anyhow!!!!!!!

I have never asked before, but I would if their feet were very dirty or muddy due to snow or rain or similar.

I totally agree. Some people's feet are worse than the bottom of their shoes! 
I hate to take my shoes off in someone's house. I think it's very rude to ask.
My DH makes me do it at my MIL house and I think the first time I met her I had a whole in my sock!!
