Insect/weather proofing foundation / Crickets in house??

Hmm..i don't know how else to say this but...we HAVE CRICKETS in our basement.
Quite a few. And they jump around quick.
I don't know how they got in but I think the heavy rain this weekend forced them in.
I'm getting really really grossed out. They look like alien bugs Chat Icon Chat Icon

I really want to "proof" the basement - seal up any cracks or minute holes that may be allowing these things in. Any help? Anyone know who to call?

How do you get rid of crickets ... thanks Chat Icon

We have the same problem with the crickets and I refuse to go in the basement for fear I will have a run in with them. They are the ugliest things and they jump fast and towards you! I've heard people using sticky tape that you can trap mice in, but then you have to pick that up. I think DH will do it in the next couple of days.. They like dark, damp places, so you may want to use a dehumidifier if you have one. Let me know what you find!

OMG, my parents had them in their old house. They were GIANT. They used to be in the basement and in their shed. The worst part was that they must have had babies and millions of them were hopping all over the place. Chat Icon

I had them in my bedroom for a few years (ground level). I spent most of the summer sleeping on the couch. The following years my dad would spray the whole foundation of the house outside, about 2-3 times during the summer. The year that I had a ton of them we actually bought a bug "bomb". We covered everything, and you just set the bomb off and it sprays and sprays into the air... leave the door closed for about a day and it worked pretty well.

Since he started spraying the foundation I don't think we've really had any. I HATE crickets!!!

We're in Wantagh - do the crickets go away in the winter? There is no way to get rid of them completely?

My husband saw baby ones...so I"m terrified of a million of them running through the basement.

Stupid crickets - THEY'RE GROSS!

I had one in my kitchen which is ground level. I don't have a basement.

They will go away. This is the season for them. The only way to get rid of them is the kill them or have the house exterminated. To prevent them from appearing in the future you must find and close up holes in the foundation, walls etc. This can be a difficult task be can be accomplished.

Maybe starting from outside would be best for those without basements.

HAHAH! That's exactly what they look like.
DH didn't know what they were at first - he got freaked out - he called them Alien Bugs.
"honey, we have alien bugs downstairs..and they jump high and fast and their are a lot of them"... oh boy

I identified a dead one that he killed online and that's EXACTLY what they look like.

We have all our things, boxes, storage all over downstairs. Now everything has to be inspected very carefully.

I think I'm gonna be sick LOL

Thanks for the info. At least in the dead of winter I can go down their and clean without having a nervous breakdown.

Is there an easy way to find holes in the basement? When carpenter ants are "in season" we get them too. I'm wondering how they get in.

Re: Insect/weather proofing foundation / Crickets in house??

I was INFESTED with crickets.

I went to the garden store and I told them and they gave me this stuff that came in a huge bag (it looked like a huge bag of dog food)

I spinkled it all around the house/lawn, I moved the garbage cans away from the house (this attracts them to the house)

and Voila! I was cricket free and it was nice and quiet at my house! Chat Icon

You may be cleaning up dead crickets though.Chat Icon

Not that I know of. If you have drywall up you should be sure there are no openings. Be sure your baseboards are sealed all the way around. If not, it's a manual inspection of the cement walls.

The other thing you can do is have your home exterminated in & out on a regular basis. My home is on a slab (no basement) and is very prone to bugs. When I first moved in there were bugs everywhere. They come several times a year and I can call them at anytime if I see bugs. Since having this service I don't see bugs much at all.

My parents get them once a year in their basement and sometimes garage. My mom calls them "cave" crickets...don't know if that is an official name or not. I think they just put out some bomb in the basement and then they are gone until next year.

OMG!!! I have a very similar pic on my computer - taken in our basement a few months ago. Our landlord didn't believe that we had these things on our basement and I actually had to take a pic of it to show him! These things freak me the hell out. I hate going downstairs to do laundry!

OMG I have these too! In my basement and in my garage. When I moved in last October they were there and they finally went away in the dead of winter but they are GROSS! And LOUD! I wonder if they will go away when I finish my basement and finally get a new garage door? They are so annoying! And they can jump like 6 feet in the air. EEEEWWWWEEEE

Re: Insect/weather proofing foundation / Crickets in house??

Yup. Where I live it's cricket central as well. Those crickets (in the picture) are called camel or cave crickets. They do not chirp and they do not have a "season" though more are usually seen during the summer months. (Can you tell I had an exterminator come to the house). At one point a few years ago, the crickets were HUGE and black and chirped real LOUD! Then they "migrated" and these new breed of crickets took over. Neither are pretty. I bought a spray from Home Depot (comes in a gray big bottle and you attach an enclosed spray nozzle to it). You spray around the whole perimeter of your house (outside) every 6 months and voila...we've been clear (keep fingers crossed)!

Re: Insect/weather proofing foundation / Crickets in house??

I'm in NJ, but we've had this problem this past summer too!

The first time I saw one in my laundry room, I didn't know what it was and I started screaming so loud I almost gave DH a heart attack!

Thankfully, the one's I've been seeing recently have been dead thanks my kitty who I guess likes to catch them. Chat Icon Chat Icon

actually, I will say I have not seen any over the past couple of weeks.

Re: Insect/weather proofing foundation / Crickets in house??

I don't remember the name. We used the whole bottle and threw it away. It is a gray colored container and it comes with an attached spray nozzle you screw into the top of the container. It's sold in Home Depot for about $7 I believe.
I only sprayed around the outside foundation of the house. It said you can spray inside too but I didn't because I have children.

It's supposedly safe for humans and pets. It didn't kill any of my grass or flowers either so I guess it just targets gross little critters. The spray works on many different insects, not just crickets. Though crickets are listed on the label.
