Re: Just got back from Charlie & the Chocolate Factory...

I'd like to see it and I LOVE Johnny Depp...but he looks too weird looking as Wonka...

I guess I'm just used to Gene Wilder.

Re: Just got back from Charlie & the Chocolate Factory...

I wrote a few thoughts about it on LIW. I really enjoyed it. I thought Depp made a weird Willy Wonka. And that's saying a lot because Willy Wonka IS weird.

and I'm so tired fo saying this..IT"S NOT A REMAKE!!!!!!!!

it's another movie version of the book, and it followed and diverged from the plot of the book in entirely different ways than the first movie. The movies are so different, it's really difficult to even compare them

Do you think a child would like it?

I also heard Johnny Depp is getting a lot of flack since he seemed to model his character after Michael Jackson. What do you think about that?

she didn't say it was a remake MARY...But you have to admit someone is going to compare the two...THEY DO HAVE THE SAME TITLE EXACTLY.

My friends and I had this conversation last night. I was surprised my DH turned around and said "I have no interest in seeing it. Nothing will be better than the original".
This is his favorite movie too. I did have a little desire to see it, however, I may wait for it to come out so I can rent it.

In my opinion it was quite bad...the oompa loopas were schizo....one minute they were singing "pop" the next "hip hop" the next "rock".....you couldn't understand fully what they were singing about....it was Chat Icon

My son is dying to see this. I have no desire. I'm not really a fan of Tim Burton.

I just read that he got his character from another member of the rolling stones...I know it wasn'y Mick and I know it wasn't Keith Richardson (he modeled his character from Pirates off of him)...I just can't remember who he said.
Ugh sorry.

The two are from the same derivative, why do you think they are not going to be compared?
I think it's silly for anyone to NOT compare the two movies and the book.

I loved Willy Wonka but I don't know if I want to see this one. Johnny Depp gives me the creeps everytime I see a clip from it. Chat Icon

I enjoyed it!
(and "Willy Wonka" is one of my favorite moveis, so I really had to go in w/ an open mind).
Johnny Depp & Fredd Highmore did an awesome job.
The Oompa Loompas were hysterical.
Tim Burton didn't disappoint.Chat Icon

"Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory" will always be my favorite, but "Charlie & the Chocolate Factory" definetly gets my seal of approval.Chat Icon

PS- AS far as kids seeing it, DH & I were probably the oldest ones in the theater (besides the parents). It was ALL kids at a 9:40pm show!

Re: Just got back from Charlie & the Chocolate Factory...

i loved it! "

here are some fun facts!

charlie and the chocolate factory" follows the novel very well. roald dahl, who wrote the book and the screenplay for the first movie was not happy with the first movie and would not sell the director the rights to the sequal "charlie and the glass elevator." Johnny Depp did an amazing performance. He was creepy and trippy. Gene Wilder was not the first choice for Wonka back then (Joel Grey was but was not considered to be formidable enough).

while comparisons to the first movie are inevitable, the second movie, i believe can stand alone. I loved the music too!

Re: Just got back from Charlie & the Chocolate Factory...

looks like we were all a bit right:

" Depp said he was inspired by the kiddie TV show hosts of his childhood, such as Captain Kangaroo and Mr. Rogers.

``They had that kind of bizarre musical rhythm and cadence to their speech pattern. I was also thinking about game show hosts I remembered. They had that kind of perpetual sort of grin on their face, almost like a clown or something. Those two things became the basis for this version of Wonka.''

Depp found Willy Wonka's hairstyle in Brian Jones of the Rolling Stones. "

Re: Just got back from Charlie & the Chocolate Factory...

I LOVED IT!!!!!
It followed the book way better than the original...aside from Willy's creepy flashback thing...and the colors and special effects were great!
I know I am going to get a lot of flack about this, but I thought is was sooooo much better than the Gene Wilder version!!!

BTW, The movies do not have the same title...the first was Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory and this one is Charlie and The Chocolate Factory (the same name as the book)

I just read something about the movies having different titles this morning! DH and I are going to Levittown to see the IMAX version tonight. I didn't know they could do that there!
