wow- my brother witnessed a "My Super Sweet 16"-worthy party last night!
It was a friend from school's sweet 16- He was so blown away, he called me to talk about it! 
It was a 5 hour party at a popular LI wedding hall about 45 minutes from here....he said the cocktail hour was fabulous- All the upgrades, of course. (Which makes me happy, because I also booked a scotto place for my wedding, and I love to hear that the food rocks!)
Then he starts on her $5000 designer gown.
THEN he says, "Her parents just gave her her birthday present - backstage passes to the KTU summer concert and a private session with Mariah Carey...AND a brand new Mercedes SUV.... AND LUCAS PRATA (the recording artist that sings "And She Said...") He came out and SANG AT HER SWEET 16. He also did his duet with Rina. 
I can't even fathom what this girl's wedding is going to be like

Ahh - thank goodness my children are going to grow up in the South... they don't do sweet 16's down here like they do in NY. I used to get blank stares from my college friends when I asked them how many they went to

I had my Sweet Sixteen at Cooky's Steak Pub. anyone remember that place?
I loved the salad bar with unlimited shrimp and who could forget the dessert bar?
We went there a lot. hmmmm..ok, now I know why I'm fat..it's my parents fault!

The Classic Rock Cluba t school threw it for me, we watched the Woodstock movie and danced on the tables and ate pizza.

We had the "My dad got me a white Mercedes for my 16th birthday" girls in my high school too. Not me mind you - hand me down car all the way. We also had private sessions with Mariah Carey - except they consisted of getting drunk at her keg party.
I guess my 3 year old better get a job if she wants to pay for her 16th birthday party.

My Sweet 16 was in my Dad's basement... stereo, some John hughes movies on VHS, pizza, cake and it was one of the best parties with some of the best memories that my friends and I have.
IMO, these parties are absolutely ridiculous.
It's a Sweet 16, no one discovered the cure for cancer!
It's all about materialism. I see it in my students... there is no work ethic anymore and it's all about me, me, me and who can top who

My sweet 16 was in my moms garage. Mind you- this was in November 
It was chilly, but the beers kept me warm, and we had an awesome time.
