I was thinking the other stereotype that debg was mentioning was when the other woman stated she realized it was safe bc her friend lived there with a white thin english boy...the poster never stated that race was her problem...

I assume you meant the stereotype of LI girls, right?
The OP is obviously ignorant and set in her ways. I doubt any amount of education about the area will change her mind. Her "bad" experience there reinforced her views and fears about Harlem.

I honestly don't think this girl meant any harm I just think she has not been exposed to many things or areas outside of her own....but Lolita not for nothing you are going above and beyond.. you make references to LI as if it is stuck up like OMG ... I was raised in queens moved to LI and now I am back in queens and to be honest I have a lot of street smarts....and At Night (like she said ) I would still not want to go there on my OWN .... I know it is being rebuilt and I am happy but the fact is there is still crime there and she is afraid to go .. whats the big deal, she was asking what we would do, not what you think of her rationale..and I know you live in williamsburgh but compare the crime rate ... you area is no where even close to it ..I am surprised at your attacking .. you IMO went off the deep end with this one ....

She did say "LI girl" in Harlem.... it automatically made a separation for herself and put ehrself into some stupid category, like an "Li girl" doesn't belong in harlem or something.
And I think by making her "PC" comments, she was bringing race into it.
She's ignorant, and as someone else said she wants to STAY ignorant, and I really think her post and the way she worded it and the way she responded to people only stereotyped herself.

Well To be honest the next poster kind of ripped into her thus making her defensive .. but I think Her Saying LI girl meant or was implying she is not street savy why would she be that, it seems she lives a sheletered life but in no way do I think she was speaking about race but more less the crime factor. I have been on 168th street it scared the christ out of me ... it is a little rough .IMO but I wouldn't descriminate going if I had to or my friend lived there. And I have also been on the reverse side there and have been called deragatory racial slurs so I think more a less it's a matter of what you are comfprtable with!

Saying she was from LI IMO wasnt her way of saying shes not street smart. if thats what she wanted to say, she could have said just that.
Not to mention everytime she said "harlem" it was "HARLEM".
It was the way she went about it. Setitng herself apart from her friend in Harlem, and using LI as the thing that made her better. This is the way I (and others) percieved her thread.
She has two choices: go or not go.
She didnt have to make a whole thread on how bad Harlem was. she could have said her friend lived in a sketchy part of the city.

I mean, if you're afraid, you're afraid. I'm having FH come with me tonight so I don't have to come home alone late at night. If it were a Friday or something, I'd do it myself, because there would be people on the trains. But I don't want to be anywhere desolate alone at night.
But what burns me, is, I mean, she's judging it by the name, and her friend lives there. because she's a "LI girl", it's good enough for her friend, but not for her? Would ehr friend have her walking through a crack den? It's like "well my friend is there, all the time, every day and she lives there, but I can't bring my delicate self over there."
It burns me a lot, because as I mentioned on one of the threads, I went to private school in LI for one year in 8th grade and it was complete culture shock for me on many levels. I remeber we had a basketball game at kew forest HS, which is in queens, and not a bad area at all, and the girs were afriad to get out of the bus. Literally afraid. I was like "Are you kidding, my grandma lives near here". And they kept making these comments about how they didn't want to get shot, etc. I was really offended. And when I had a party at my house, a lot of the kids made comments about being afraid of it. I know, they were in 8th grade, but whatever. In college one kid, who was like 25 at the time was like "I was born in the ghetto before we moved to LI"... Someone asked him where he lived, and he was like "Ozone Park" I was like "ummm..I don't live in 'the ghetto'". It really bothers me. I think I live in a decent neighborhood. And a lot of "bad" neighborhoods are just filled with decent hardworking people. Maybe they can't afford a benz, or something, but most people are decent, and that matters more.

IMO, when discussing being afraid to go to Harlem it is only natural for people to assume that race is part of the issue. It is a fact that Harlem is a prodomianately African American area. Where as it is a rumor that Harlem is the part of the city where gangs roam the streets shooting at people and the homeless crowd the area. There are areas of Harlem that are rough, but there are areas of Chelsea, the West Villiage, the East Village etc. that are rough. Harlem just has a bad rap and I wish more people would give it a chance.
Just FYI, 168 Street is Washington Heights not Harlem.

I agree- and admitt- that I think if I went there, and had things yelled at me, I might be a little scared to go back....Actually I could go to any bad area on LI too, if I dont feel safe- I might not return....
