all schools have a lock down policy at all times. it is a must! if there was a fire in the area, a robbery or some exscaped from a jail and was by a school, there are many of reasons for it but yes all school have to have it!

I'm glad they are making you aware of this so that you decided if you want to keep your child home that day.
We just had something similar at our High School and the parents were not made aware of the situation even though threats had been received 3 days in advance. The police and a "privileged" few all kept their kids home but no one else had the opportunity to make that decision.

Wouldn't it be nice if kids could act upon movies that are actually good and teach a lesson. What a wonderful world it would be!!

huh?? I never said you were going to leave her home alone. You are thinking about keeping/leaving her home on 6/6/06.
I prefer not to say publicly where I teach, as you never know who is lurking  , but I teach where most people would consider a "rough" area.

ok let me put it this way jen would you rather hear that something happen and someone(child) got hurt or the opportunity to make sure any child you know where safe? i will be keeping kryssy home that day but not because she will be one of those kids to cause a problem but because there are kids that cause problems and i do not ever want to get the phone call like my girlfriend had to about her daughter who got slashed by a knife in school! and there was prior notice of this but not to the parents. then after that happen they lied about it and said nothing happen and now notifie parents anytime there is a POSSIBLITY of something happening!

all districts are required by law to have one. we have used it once - when there was a bank robbery near by (we also do a drill 1-2 times a school year).
the definiton of lock-down that WF uses is a little weird though. our lock-downs means NO ONE (teachers, students) enter/leave the building, period.

i would love that! it's days like this that i am glad kryssy is in special ed and behind and not caught up with all the normal teen stuff!

we had a lock down once when i was subbing in coppiague - all schools must have them and are *supposed* to practice them. In Coppiague, there had been a robbery nearby and the cops were chasing the guys with helicopters.....
in pt jeff where I student taught, we had mock ones to practice....
most schools have two kinds of lock downs (or the ones I worked in and now work in have....) - modified lockdown [teachers lock their classroom doors and no one is allowed in halls] and total/"emergency" lockdown [shades down,lights out, kids in corncer or "safe" area of room, not near windows, etc.]
There are also codes that range from district to district to notify staff of what is going on (code pink, oragne, green, etc.)
sometimes in today's world it is better to be safe than sorry.....
ps - I am at the elementary level!

Back in the day...my high school had lock downs VERY often..of course we were right across the street from the jail though. But I remember the school I worked in, before 9/11 the back door for teachers was always open and security wasn't as tight..teachers left windows open..classrooms unlocked. After 9/11..lockdown meant doors locked at all times..every teacher got a key to the school, windows closed if you leave your room, someone sitting at the front door to check people in etc.

in all fairness, lockdowns are usually district-wide - a lockdown in the elementary schools doesn't mean something happened in that particular school. on days there are major fights in the HS, all of the schools lock-down, since in most districts there is very little distance between schools.

I think its a combo of both and the fear of "what if". What if they don't lock down...something happens and then they are scrutinized. Its a no win..better to be safe than sorry!!

They may be...just may not have notified of it. May have warned teachers to be extra cautious..you also have to look at the districts...not saying WF is bad..I know nothing about them...but I know areas near WF are bad as opposed to other schools.

No i am not up on the SD thing all that much since i do not have a child of my own...
But i do hear a lot about what goes on from people and my DH...

I mean...i just would hate that every time i "questionable" movie came out i would have to keep my kid home?
Our kids are no longer safe in their schools ...

jen right now it's because of the movie , unfor. there might be kids that do act out on it because of the movie and because they think it will be the "COOL" thing to do, but usually it's because of a robbery or fire or exscaped con, stuff like that.

i think it is great that you made EVERYONE aware of what goes on....NOT JUST PARENTS.
I plan to be a parent one day and i found this to be VERY informative...
what is wrong about that?
