Special vacation (so I guess big gift)
DH & I were planning our wedding, so I got gypped a little for my 30th. DH swears he is going to make it up to me for my 35th.

Totally agree!
My husband surprised me with a trip to Vegas for my 30th and friends met us there!
I took him to CA wine country for his 30th.
Both trips were just amazing and such a great way to remember our 30th birthdays.

I'm almost too old to remember my 30th but I opted for the gift instead of the "big" party. I got my diamond necklace and a smaller party at North Shore Steakhouse w/ family and my closest friend. My family is pretty awesome.
For my <gulp> 40th last October, DH wanted to throw me a party and I chose a quiet dinner and my Dell Laptop!
Big gifts rock!!

Hmmm...being born on Christmas Eve I didn't have many parties growing up so I kind of wanted a party...but I like presents too so I left it up to DH. He surprised me with a party AND diamond earrings
Going forward - for other milestone b/day's - I would love to say vacation but I have yet to convince him to go away for our b/day's (he's 12/22)...we'll see.

I met DH after I turned 30 but as I approach 40, a party sounds like a blast. I had a fun time at my wedding, but I think I would like a big party that is less stressful to plan.

My DH is turning 30 on Jan1 and I wanted to throw him a party but he is not into it. We are going to take a vacation together instead. It depends on what type of person you are. If you love parties go for it!
