Sorry, wedding related, but I'd prefer YOUR opinions over LIW...
Rich and I are having a reception. (not this year)
It will be the week of Thanksgiving - either the day before, or the day after. (Wednesday or Friday.)
He's an untenured teacher, so taking days off for a honeymoon will be a little difficult, SO we'd prefer the Wednesday, so we can leave Thursday (thanksgiving) for a honeymoon, and spend the next week away (he can use his wedding days, and 2 personal days for that week.)
Rich's Mom FLIPPED OUT when I said Wednesday. She said, "Well nobody's going to come on a Wednesdayyyy, I've never heard of such a thing!!!"
She made me feel pretty lousy about that...
What do you think?

If you have a lot of people traveling I would say Friday. Weds. is one of the worst traveling days (if not THE) of the year, so that might deter people.

You will get some people that won't come because they either have to plan for thanksgiving dinner... or will be going away.
A lot of people take a couple of days to plan for thanksgiving and start cooking days before. This may impact some people.
But if you want that day... you better book fast cause you will probably pay as much on that day as you would a Saturday night... and I am sure places will book that day quickly.

I can see her point, but I think people will go. Some might be pissy, but they will show and have a great time once they are there. I always go out on that Wed. so it is perfect for me.
I would much rather that, then a Sunday wedding. A day off afterwards is so necessary IMO.
Could you possibly postpone honeymoon though, till Christmas vacation?

IMO, it depends on the family
I know in our case, holidays are a big deal, so for us to plan a reception right before Thanksgiving would make it difficult for a lot of people to come.
But like I said, that's us

I agree, if they want to come they'll come. There is a girl on LIW that is getting married then and her sn is "daybeforethanksgiving" and you could ask her how many acceptances she's received so far.

Good point. Don't do this if you have a ton of people coming from out of town.
I had my wedding over Memorial Day weekend. Could have been a traveller's nightmare... but I only had one out of town guest I was inviting (and he didn't show).

I think we're going to take a short honeymoon after the reception, then save the hawaii trip that we're dying for until xmas break.

I have no out of town guests, and Rich will only have 1 or 2 families coming in.

For me, I'd have to take the day off work to get there, which can be annoying. Bottom line is if it's important enough to them, people show. My cousin took her 4 boys out of school & drove up from Florida to attend my wedding (Jan 8th). I had another cousin who gave the excuse that she couldnt' swing it financially - which honestly is a lame excuse if you know about something a full year in advance. That's ok, it was important to one cousin, not so important to the other.
If most of your invites are local people, I'd say Wednesday would be fine. Also I would disagree that a reception hall would charge more for a Wednesday night of Thanksgiving than a Saturday night - but than again I'm going by 2000 rates - it was significantly less because it was a holiday eve (not applicable to New Year's eve - it would be prohibitive).

I would book and send out save the dates as soon as possible. I also think that the people who want to be there will. Personally, I remember that night as a big party night and I would enjoy going to a wedding that night - plenty of time to recuperate!

My cousin got married on the wed before thanksgiving a couple of years ago - almost everyone showed up. Some people will take an extra day off from work for a longer weekend - I wouldn't let your FMIL upset you.

i have heard of alot of people getting married the day before thanksgiving...if people go out and drink that night considering its the biggest drinking day of the year ...why would people not go to a wedding. If they want to come they will, i stopped worrying because i look at it this way the people who are truly important to me like my dad, sisters,gram, they will be there !!! I know how you feel i get sh@@! all the time for having a wedding so close to the holidays!! (dec) oh well its YOUR day !!!

so that would give you guys two extra days for your honeymoon? do it. This is just one thing, in a long list of things coming up ahead that you and your MIL will not see eye to eye with. Take it in, and move on.

I would choose Friday. A lot of people are off and will be a little more rested. All the stress and preparation for Thanksgiving will be gone by that day. Often times it is a lazy day for some people and many would look forward to having a afternoon or night activity. (don't know which one you are aiming for). Friends of ours got married the day after and it went well. This is JMO.

I think it will increase the # of no's you get. Your coworkers and more distant friends may have family plans, vacations etc. It might entice your OOT family members to come, b/c then they could stay for Thanksgiving and spend time with the rest of the family- killing two birds with one stone.
I agree with Heather- if you want that day, send out STD's immediately.

Personally, I've never heard of a Wednesday wedding either - or should I say I've never been invited to a Wednesday wedding - but i know they exist.
I can see it working because people are off the next day for Thanksgiving but I can also see people getting annoyed too. People are working on the Wednesday and the party is sure to end late (meaning they will sleep in for the morning of Thanksgiving) and i can see oldtimers especially getting annoyed because they have to make all the preparation for their turkey dinner and entertaining their guests.....blah blah...but who really cares for them if that's what u want to do.
I would do what works best for you but be prepared to have people not up to that idea.
Who ever wants to come comes. Its your day and you are getting married regardless of who chooses to be there or not. If you are getting negative responses from the family about the date though - i would really reconsider and try it for the Friday. JMO.
