Its a sad day in Rich-land.

Rich had an observation lesson yesterday, and had his analysis with the Principal and AP today.

Some background: he's currently a fulltime sub, bouncing from leave-replacement position to leave-replacement position within the district. There are no permanent classrooms available for him to have, but he's contracted at first year teacher salary, not sub salary. (Which is awesommmme)

So, back to the meeting today: Basically, they complimented his plan book and his organization and structure, but then he was told that if a permanent classroom opens up and theres a toss-up between him and another candidate, chances are the other candidate will win out. They advised that he get some resumes out.

Rich is CRUSHED. He puts evvvvvverything into teaching. everything. He's pi$$ed, yet really upset at the same time. Feelings of inadequacy, I guess.

Luckily, he's contracted til June. He needs to find something for September.

This job's location was great, because he's not too far from Queens College, where he's doing his Master's. Chat Icon Oh well.

Anyone have any suggestions, other than mass-produce the resumes?

Thanks a bunch. Chat Icon

Unfortunately, I think the only thing he can do at this point is put his resume out there as much as possible! They must like him if they told him the situation with such honesty though.

I think it is actually a blessing that they told him this now. Now there is no guessing on his part. He knows what he needs to do, and he can do it. It s-cks when it doesn't work out the way you want, however, everything happens for a reason!Chat Icon

I totally agree with you - I've been bugging him to send out resumes anyway, to find something closer to home. He just wanted to stay there until next year when he finished his master's. oh well. We'll start looking!

As crappy as it is, it's better that it came up now than in June- he's got time to find something and I am sure he will. And since the admins were so complimentary I am sure that he will be able to get some great recs from them.

In fact, I would tell him, if he mails resumes, to put in a copy of a letter from a supervisor. I was advised to do the same and when I went on interviews, the interviewers mentioned that they found my recommendation impressive. It can't hurt.

Though now, it seems like most districts use an online system. Good luck to him!

Re: Its a sad day in Rich-land.

Did they explain to him why he wouldn't be their choice or what is it that he can work on to better himself as a teacher? When principals don't give constructive feedback that really angers me!

What grade level does he teach? Was he teaching in public school? Is he a Fellow?

Re: Its a sad day in Rich-land.

I am so sorry to hear about this - but I totally agree that the district must really like him for them to be so honest about it! They really could have strung him along until June.

Tell him to also register at www.teachli.org. It is a group of Suffolk County districts - they hold ed fairs and seminars as well as post openings.. And the NYTimes is the best place for education job openings.

With his special ed and inclusion background, I really don't think he will have a problem. There areas are so much in demand right now.

unfortunately that is not always the case. with so many school budgets expected to fail, those teachers with the least seniority are more likely to go. there really is no "safe" job anymore in teaching! and with so many candidates, districts pretty much have all the power, even after you get a job!!
